Holy Land pilgrimage helped future deacons better understand origins of Christianity

August 16, 2017

“The Holy Land Experience” – a pilgrimage to the sites where Jesus was born, performed miracles, died on the cross and rose from the dead – helped future deacons, their wives and others gain a deeper understanding of Christianity’s origins two millennia ago.

Leading the 11-day trip was Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick, SM, director of Chaminade University’s Master of Pastoral Theology Program, which prepares students for ordination as permanent deacons in the Roman Catholic Church.

Every place the pilgrims visited this past spring is mentioned in Biblical passages the deacons will eventually preach about, Fr. Paul explained.

“Seeing the Sea of Galilee, knowing the distance between Nazareth and Jerusalem, visiting Caesarea Maritima on the Mediterranean Coast where Paul was judged by Herod Agrippa and sent to Rome, praying on Calvary where Christ died, walking on the Herodian steps coming out of the temple which Jesus would have walked on – all these are indelible memories,” Fr. Paul said. “Every day is filled with experiences like that.”

Deacon candidate Sándor Hernández Morales said traveling with his wife Meali`inani to the Holy Land “forever marked” their lives and faith.

“Never will the Scriptures read the same after experiencing Palestine and Israel in this way,” Morales said. “From the newsletters leading up to the trip, to the daily activities, to the people we have gotten to know, we really felt immersed in the cultures and historical places we visited.”

Deacon-in-training Renier “Rey” Torres said the trip enabled him to “contextualize scripture and the geographical landscape of the Holy Lands.”

“One gets a deeper appreciation and sense of understanding the struggle Christians have in that particular region of the world as they continue to live and promote the faith,” Torres said. “Most amazing was the opportunity to witnesses the universality of our church as faithful members from our global community gathered to participate in the same pilgrimage.”

Fr. Martin Solma, SM, who serves as Chancellor on Chaminade’s Board of Regents, said the pilgrimage exceeded all his expectations.

“The highlight of the trip for me was the three-hour ‘vigil’ some of us kept in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which houses both the Rock of Calvary and the Tomb of the Lord,” Fr. Martin said. “Spending time alone in both of these very holy places moved me very deeply.

“I was also deeply moved by the faith of so many pilgrims who had come, like we did, to touch the roots of our faith community.”

Tour stops included the Golan Heights, Nazareth, the Dead Sea, Jericho, Masada, the Old City of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives.

For his exemplary work while enrolled in Chaminade University’s Master of Education program – and the impact he’s expected to make on Hawaii schools – Derek Santos ‘16 has become the second annual recipient of the Kathy Kawaguchi Award for Excellence in Educational Leadership.

Santos, a vice principal at Ewa Beach Elementary School, said he was surprised and humbled to receive the recognition from Chaminade Division of Education faculty.

“Kathy Kawaguchi embodied the instructional leader, something I strive for each day when working as an administrator,” Santos said. “Each day I work to not only teach my students and staff about integrity and being lifelong learners, but I also teach to the heart with empathy through the relationships I build.”

The award honors the memory of Kawaguchi, Chaminade’s former Director of Leadership and Educational Projects. The Hilo native, who passed away in 2016, also had a long career with the Hawaii State Department of Education.

Chaminade’s Master of Education program offers concentrations in Educational Leadership, which prepares candidates for administrative positions with an emphasis on K-12 schools; Instructional Leadership, which provides advanced knowledge of classroom practices for teachers and other educators not currently aspiring to become administrators; and Child Development, which offers advanced study of developmental theory, research and application.

Accounting program validated by International Accreditation Council for Business Education

August 14, 2017

Following a rigorous self-evaluation process and independent peer review, Chaminade University’s Accounting program gained accreditation from a professional agency promoting excellence in business education worldwide.

In validating the program, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE) recognized Chaminade’s commitment to academic quality, integrity, responsibility and ethical behavior in its accounting programs and operations.

Headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, IACBE has accredited more than 1,300 business and business-related programs in the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and South America

Instrumental in earning the council’s stamp of approval was Richard Kido, an Associate Professor of Accounting with the School of Business and Communication. Kido joined professors from numerous other universities in creating standards and criteria for accounting accreditation over a two-year period ending in 2016.

Kido later wrote a self-assessment report of Chaminade’s accounting program then helped facilitate a site visit by IACBE representatives so they could interview administrators, faculty, students and alumni. Employers were also interviewed to determine if Chaminade graduates were adequately prepared for their accounting jobs.

Based on feedback from students and alumni who praised Kido’s instruction methods and dedication to service learning, IACBE presented him with the 2017 “Excellence in Teaching Award” in April at the organization’s annual conference and assembly meeting in San Francisco.

Chaminade’s School of Business and Communication offers a Master of Business Administration degree along with undergraduate programs in Accounting, Business Administration, Communication, International Trade and Computer Information Systems. Undergraduate degree programs in Business Administration and Management are also available through PACE (Professional and Continuing Education) online and evening courses.

Winning a “Pokie” for “Director of a Musical” was Bro. Gary Morris, SM, with Chaminade’s Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. In addition, the associate professor of performing arts won the “Leading Male in a Musical” award for his role in “1776: The Musical,” staged at Windward Community College’s Paliku Theatre.

Chaminade’s production was also recognized for:

Silversword standouts Goodwin and Kuany sign with pro basketball teams in England, Australia

August 10, 2017

Two former Chaminade University basketball players – Rohndell Goodwin ‘17 and Kuany Kuany ‘17 – will compete this season for professional teams in England and Australia, respectively.

Rohndell GoodwinGoodwin, honored as “Male Athlete of the Year” at Chaminade’s annual Co-Curricular Awards, signed a one-year contract with the Bristol Flyers of the British Basketball League. The California native is one of three “imports” from outside the European Union allowed on the Flyers roster under league rules.

During his two seasons with the Silverswords, Goodwin averaged 18.4 points per game, the third-highest scoring output in school history. The 6-foot-5 guard was also selected for the 2016-17 Pacific West Conference First Team and All-West Region Second Team.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to be a professional basketball player,” Goodwin said. “Everything that I’ve been working for is starting to pay off. It really hasn’t hit me just yet. I feel it will really hit me once I get on the plane and land in Bristol.”

Kuany Kuany '17Kuany inked a two-year contract with the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans of Australia’s National Basketball League. The 6-foot-5 guard was then sent to the team’s developmental squad, the Cairns Marlins of the Queensland Basketball League.

Alum McDonald Embraces ‘Think Global, Act Local’ Mantra as BEARPAW’s VP of International Sales

August 9, 2017

For alumnus Kevin McDonald ‘06, one of his biggest takeaways from Chaminade University involves thinking globally and acting locally to make the world a better place. Now he applies that high-minded philosophy in his duties as vice president of international sales for the BEARPAW footwear company.

Kevin McDonald '06“Think global, act local perfectly sums up and applies to business and causes that are important to me,” says McDonald, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. “Instead of focusing outward, we have looked to help the immediate region surrounding our head office just outside of Sacramento.”

BEARPAW charitable activities include donating about 6,000 pairs of girls’ boots to the Ticket to Dream Foundation, which provides services for foster children. BEARPAW also sponsored and participated in the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event supporting WEAVE, a nonprofit group that helps victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and sex trafficking in Sacramento County.

And, yes, McDonald joined other men in completing WEAVE’s playful, mile-long charity walk while teetering on red, high-heeled shoes.

McDonald joined BEARPAW three years ago after receiving a phone call from company founder Tom Romeo and president John Pierce. Now that he manages all global sales outside the USA, McDonald is responsible for product selection, pricing, forecasting, marketing, presentations, customer service “and just about anything you can imagine.”

The alum gained an appreciation for international business between his junior and senior years at Chaminade when visiting China through the Hogan Entrepreneurs Program.

Kevin McDonald '06“This was my first time traveling outside of North America,” McDonald notes. “Fast forward to today, I have been to over 30 countries. Each has similarities, but being open and aware to the cultural differences has had a major impact on navigating these markets.”

Reflecting on his Chaminade education, McDonald is especially grateful for the knowledge shared by Dr. Margaret Friedman, an associate professor of marketing.

“I was not the best-in-class student,” McDonald admits, “but Dr. Friedman connected and always provided great nuggets of information that were easily digestible and applicable. These helped to expand the thought process when addressing a consumer or business need/want and outlining or brainstorming your strategic approach.

“All things truly come back to the 4 P’s” (price, product, promotion and place), McDonald says, pointing out that these simple marketing concepts “are often and easily overlooked.

Any career advice for current business students?

“Keep an open mind and be ready to jump if an opportunity presents itself,” McDonald counsels. “Absorb as much as you can from as many people as possible, from as many different walks of life and career paths.

“Have fun and enjoy the journey,” he adds. “It is just beginning and never ends.”

Chaminade’s School of Business and Communication offers undergraduate programs in Business Administration, Accounting, Communication, Management and International Studies (International Trade). The school also offers a Master of Business Administration graduate program with concentrations in Accounting, Island Business and Not-for-Profit Management.
