Nursing Students Win International Competition

November 1, 2018

As a freshman, Rosemarie knew she wanted to create a Chaminade HOSA club. “I wanted to start it right away in fall when I first came to Chaminade,” says the nursing major. “But since I was a freshman I didn’t really know what to do yet. In spring, I got some upperclassmen to help me and from there we started our various community service projects and going to competitive events. Now Chaminade has an official HOSA club that’s affiliated with the international organization.”

Rosemarie Maltezo has been a member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals ever since high school. The international student organization is designed to empower future healthcare leaders and member students participate in community service, leadership opportunities, networking events and competitions.

The Chaminade club started in the spring semester of 2018. Within a few months, they had won first place in the statewide HOSA competition for their project on preventing teen dating violence. By the summer of 2018, they had won second place in the international competition in Dallas, Texas.

“We had to give a 10-minute presentation on a public health topic,” says Rosemarie. “We wanted to show the signs and symptoms of dating violence so to think outside of the box we put together a video that told the story of three different teenage girls. The video seemed to really hit the judges, they seemed like they were about to cry.”

The team is already eagerly awaiting next year’s competition in Orlando, Florida. They hope to expand the club to include other students interested in healthcare from other majors and bring even more team members with them next year. “Students interested in business can do it too,” says Rosemarie. “Anyone who is interested in something health-related can join.”

Watch a video that Rosemarie and her team created about their experience at HOSA in Dallas. Then, watch the award-winning video that Rosemarie and her HOSA team created for the competition.

Bringing Economics Outside

October 31, 2018

Guanlin Gao Economics ClassProfessor Guanlin Gao’s environmental economics class recently headed outdoors to see their classroom learnings in action. On October 11, the class headed to the Waihe’e Water Tunnel operated by the Board of Water Supply to learn about the economics behind water recycling and conservation.

“The Waihe’e Tunnel and watershed tour not only offers an experience walking inside the 1,500-foot dike tunnel that provides water to Windward Oahu, but also allows us to actually see the water recycling process,” says Dr. Gao. “It will help students better understand water recycling and conservation, as well as the concept of a natural monopoly.”

Guanlin Gao Economics ClassChaminade is known for bringing education out of the classroom and into everyday surroundings. It’s not uncommon for students to snorkel on a coral reef, hike a nearby valley, visit a police investigation lab, intern at a hospital or volunteer in an elementary school classroom. After all, the best learning happens by doing.

“Besides learning economic models and theories, I also want my students to have the first-hand experience and know the real-world applications of the knowledge they have learned in the classroom,” says Dr. Gao. “I know that will help them understand the things we learn in class better and leave them with a long-lasting memory.”

Welcome Back Kick-Off 2018

October 30, 2018

Hogan kickoff event with students and suppporters

The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program hosted another successful Kick-Off, welcoming in a new academic year with a special reception at the Pacific Club, continuing the tradition of connecting our local business community with our ambitious Hogan students.

We were honored to have Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO of PBS Hawaii, speak to our students and celebrate their entrepreneurial spirit. She spoke about what it means to follow one’s passions without letting go of one’s values.

After, Leslie was joined by President Babington and more than 100 business leaders on the Lawn to congratulate Hogan students on starting a new school term.

Dr. Kate Perrault Named 40 Under 40

October 25, 2018

Katelynn Perrault

Dr. Kate Perrault made this year’s Power List published by The Analytical Scientist. The annual Power List recognizes the great work of analytical scientists all over the world. This year’s theme, 40 under 40, celebrates rising scientists making waves in analytical science.

“I follow the Power List every year,” says Dr. Perrault. “It’s such a big honor now to be on it. To be nominated for something like this so early in my career is really meaningful.”

As a forensic scientist and an odor scientist, Dr. Perrault analyzes the chemicals released by odors, specifically the odors that law enforcement canines use to find dead bodies. Canines are our best tool to find bodies following a natural disaster, homicide or missing person alert–they latch on to the smell of a certain chemical that is released when a body decomposes.

“We wanted to understand exactly what dogs smell when they find a body,” says Dr. Perrault. “But that became a major challenge because the traditional techniques used to characterize odors weren’t good enough. My work identified better methods with newer technologies, and now I want to use those methods to study how different microbes on a body can change the odor it releases.”

Kicking Off a Year of Business

October 15, 2018

2018 Hogan Entrepreneurial Program Kick OffChaminade staff, faculty and community partners joined together to welcome nearly 40 new Hogan Entrepreneurial Program students at the Pacific Club on October 10.

The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program provides an entrepreneurial certificate to Chaminade’s juniors, seniors and graduate students. Students in the program spend a year taking classes and hearing from weekly guest speakers to learn the principles of starting a business.

“Our motto is doing business things that make social sense and doing social things that make business sense,” says Dr. John Webster, director of the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program. “We ask our students to take this motto seriously, and they do.”

The program’s annual kick-off event allowed students a chance to meet with members of the business community and hear from keynote speaker Leslie Wilcox.

2018 Hogan Entrepreneurial Program Kick OffPresident and CEO of PBS Hawaii Leslie Wilcox pulled from her well-respected career in news and media to present the new entrepreneurs with five leadership takeaways:

 1. Cultivate a simple mindset
 2. Respect team smarts
 3. Be willing to accept advice and constructive criticism
 4. Develop battle-hardened confidence
 5. Be fearless

After the address, attendees enjoyed a beautiful outdoor reception where students had a chance to network with and meet Hawaii business leaders.

Congratulations to our 2018 Hogan Entrepreneurs, we can’t wait to see what you achieve over the next year!
