HOSA Club Celebrates Win at State Competition

March 12, 2019

Nursing students with their award at HOSA competitionThe Chaminade HOSA-Future Health Professionals club began in the spring semester of 2018. By summer, they had two wins under their belt from a statewide and international competition.

Now the club has added two more awards to its list of accomplishments after competing in this year’s Hawaii HOSA Fourteenth Annual Student Leadership Conference, which was held at the Hawaii Convention Center from February 26–27.

Chaminade is one of eight postsecondary institutions and 23 high schools in Hawaii that participated in the statewide HOSA competition. HOSA is an international organization with 57 chapters around the world. It provides opportunities for students interested in healthcare to build their skillset, knowledge and leadership abilities through competitions, networking events and community service.

Nursing students with their award at HOSA competitionChaminade’s HOSA club competed and placed in the Public Health and Extemporaneous Health Poster categories. A team of seven students, led by HOSA club president Rosemarie Maltezo, won first place for their Public Health team video presentation on disaster preparedness. Sophomore Jeni Marin Ruis won second place for her live poster presentation on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 6|18 Initiative, which aims to reduce healthcare costs by addressing six expensive health conditions like asthma and high blood pressure.

“The feeling of winning in the different categories is exhilarating,” Maltezo said. “Hard work does pay off, with months of prepping and planning.”

Both groups will take their projects to the HOSA International Leadership Conference at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida, this summer. At last year’s international conference in Texas, Chaminade’s HOSA club won second place in the Public Health category for its video on dating violence.

#BalanceforBetter on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2019

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Chaminade University faculty and students take a minute to weigh in on what a gender-balanced world means to them:

Joe AllenDr. Joe Allen
Associate Professor, Criminology and Criminal Justice
“A gender-balanced world recognizes the differences and the similarities between and within various genders and celebrates them. This celebration means the provision of equal opportunity, sharing the gifts that each of us brings to the table and embracing the idea that all individuals should be treated with fairness and dignity. Gender is a lesser category of one’s humanity. This should not be forgotten.”

Ke'alohi CanadyKeʻalohi Canady ’20
Business Marketing major from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
“I believe we should live in a world where men and women have an equal opportunity to achieve their greatest dreams. A gender balanced world looks like everyone embracing inclusivity and being more open-minded.“

Kate PerraultDr. Katelynn Perrault
Assistant Professor, Forensic Sciences and Chemistry
“A truly gender-balanced world is not purely a numbers game. It is about creating a culture of gender balance. We need to actively work to create space in which women no longer feel the need to live in hyper-awareness—where we do not need to be on guard for subtle comments or behaviors that undermine our expertise, opinions or view that we deserve a spot at the table.”

Kiso SkeltonKiso Skelton ’21
Historical and Political Studies major from American Samoa
A gender-balanced world serves as a community where people embrace diversity and value all genders. It is important to have a gender-balanced world because we are stronger when we come together as one, and our purpose in this gender balanced world is to lift each other up, not the other way around. Furthermore, all genders are entitled to all opportunities that will positively impact them.

Dr. Lynn BabingtonDr. Lynn Babington
President
“A gender-balanced world is one where gender equality is a given—where people, regardless of their gender preference, have the same access to education and good jobs, and are equally represented in leadership positions and decision making. Gender balance, along with diversity and equality, in all sectors of society is critically important if we hope to build a strong and sustainable world.”

Skye HaragaSkye Haraga ’21
Biochemistry major from Kāneʻohe, Hawaiʻi
“Gender diversity is about representing all genders. ʻAʻole pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi.’ (Knowledge is not limited to one school). You are not limited by your gender.”

Ashely HillAshley Hill ’22
Education major from Kāneʻohe, Hawaiʻi
“To me, gender balance is something that everyone should be entitled to. As our society is changing we need to continue to shed light on the importance of gender equality. I believe that if we maintain this shift toward gender balance, not only in the workforce but in our communities, the world will be a more efficient society.”

Andrew InesAndrew Ines ’19
Business Administration major from Kalihi, Hawaiʻi
“Gender equality is important because women deserve just as much credit as us men do. Women can be just as strong as men.”

Chaminade Hosts Honolulu District History Day

March 8, 2019

2019 History Day student displaysOn Saturday, March 2, more than 200 junior high and high school students from 11 public and private schools participated in Honolulu District History Day at Chaminade University.

The Honolulu district is one of nine districts to participate in the statewide Hawaii History Day, which is supported by the Hawaii Council for the Humanities. History Day is the result of a year-long program that encourages elementary to high-school students to study history through a research-based approach. Throughout the program, students create a presentation based on their research and submit it for evaluation by a panel of judges. Projects can take the form of an exhibit, documentary, performance, paper or website.

2019 History Day student displays“History Day turns students in grades 6–12 into real historians,” says Michio Yamasaki, Chaminade professor and chair of the Hawaii Council for the Humanities Board of Directors. “They do original research on a topic, studying primary sources, such as letters, diaries and photographs.”

According to this year’s History Day theme, Triumph & Tragedy in History, students from the Honolulu district submitted more than 100 projects on a range of topics like the Stonewall Riots, the Hanapepe Massacre, the Spanish Flu and more.

Based on evaluations conducted by 43 judges at Honolulu District History Day, three Junior Division (grades 6–8) projects and three Senior Division (grades 9–12) projects from each category advanced to compete at the statewide competition.

Those who passed the Honolulu district competition will join students from across the state to participate in Hawaii History Day on April 13 at Windward Community College. Projects to advance from Hawaii History Day will be presented in June at National History Day, held at the University of Maryland, College Park.
