Chaminade University Receives Grant from Albert T. & Wallace T. Teruya Foundation

February 26, 2019

Hale HoalohaChaminade University of Honolulu was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Albert T. & Wallace T. Teruya Foundation to name the Multipurpose Conference Room in the newly renovated Hale Hoaloha building on the University’s campus.

Formerly used as a residence hall, the three-story Hale Hoaloha was renovated to house the much-needed conference room as well as additional classrooms, the Center for Teaching and Learning (a professional development space for Chaminade faculty) and office space for Chaminade’s Criminology and Criminal Justice program. The 1,775 sq. ft. conference room is on the ground floor and opens to a garden. It is used for large classes, guest lectures, donor events, and internal and public workshops.

“We are so grateful to the Albert T. & Wallace T. Teruya Foundation for their generous support,” Lynn Babington, PhD, president of Chaminade University, said in a statement. “The new conference room will help us better serve our large cohorts of students, such as our nursing students, and will allow us to host a myriad of events on campus.”

According to Roy Uyehara, Secretary/Trustee of the Teruya Foundation (and a Chaminade alumnus ‘67), “the Trustees at the Teruya Foundation are happy to invest in a project that will promote Chaminade’s ability to offer its students a first-class education in an innovative and supportive learning environment. As an alum, I am pleased that from among competing grant requests the trustees chose to support Chaminade’s endeavor.”

Students Say Thank You at Mahalo Scholarship Luncheon 2019

February 25, 2019

Andrew Trapsi and Glenn MederosWhen fourth-year biochemistry student Andrew Trapsi isn’t in the classroom, he’s an active participant in Chaminade University’s Campus Ministry. From attending retreats to feeding the homeless to volunteering at a local fishpond, Trapsi has discovered his role as a community servant through the teachings of Chaminade’s Catholic Marianist values.

This academic year, Trapsi was one of 209 Chaminade students to receive scholarships funded by generous donors, which totaled to $2.4 million. Chaminade manages more than 100 donor-funded scholarships offered to student-athletes and those pursuing degrees in nursing, education, biology, criminal justice and counseling psychology.

To extend a personal thank you, students welcomed their scholarship benefactors to the university’s annual Mahalo Scholarship Luncheon held on Feb. 8 in Clarence T.C. Ching Conference Center.

Among those in attendance were 74 student recipients of donor-funded scholarships, faculty and donors including representatives from Kamehameha Schools and The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation.

There, students got the opportunity to get to know their donors, share about their experiences at Chaminade and most importantly, express gratitude.

The program included motivational speeches from donor and alumna Millicent Perreira-Gilmore, accounting professor Wayne Tanna and chosen student speaker, Trapsi.

Women’s Soccer Team Spends Valentine’s Day with Veterans

February 20, 2019

What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than by showing some gratitude and care for those who have served our country? Several of our women’s soccer team members did just that.

Students Cierra Toledo-Muragin, Rachel Arakawa and Randi Fontes spent their Valentine’s Day visiting with hospitalized veterans at the Tripler Army Medical Center.

“My grandpa is a veteran and I know how much he enjoys talking about his life when he was in the army,” says Toledo-Muragin, a third-year nursing student from Hilo. “I really enjoyed spending Valentine’s Day with veterans who do not have any family here.”

The students first met with Carlos Santana, a community liaison from Mazie Hirono’s Office, who taught them about the importance of veterans in our community. They then spent time visiting with medics from Desert Storm and Vietnam who shared practical information and a wealth of stories.

“They were so nice and supportive and emphasized the importance of getting an education,” says Toledo-Muragin. “They were proud of us for being student-athletes and motivated us to keep going and to accomplish our goals.”

Sino Capitalism 2019

February 18, 2019

Sino Capitalism Conference 2019
Sino Capitalism Conference 2019

Recognizing China’s ever-growing global importance, Chaminade University has worked to increase the awareness of the Asian giant’s social and economic dynamics. To mark these efforts, Chaminade has established an annual forum to explore a facet of Sino-Capitalism, China’s unique form of capitalism. The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program acts as the secretariat for the event. This opportunity is funded in-part thanks to an Asia-Pacific Speaker endowment established by the late Stanley W. Hong, a Chaminade Regent.

A rich and challenging discussion was led by Dr. Christopher McNally, Chaminade Professor of Political Economy and Adjunct Senior Fellow at the East-West Center. The title of his talk was The US-China Trade War: Causes, Prospects, and Implications. Dr. McNally’s research focuses on comparative capitalisms, especially the nature and logic of China’s capitalist transition.

International Entrepreneurial Study Missions

February 6, 2019

Students visiting Chin and India for the Hogan study mission

The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program is a firm believer that education should take place beyond the walls of a standard classroom, which is why it encourages its students to apply to these study abroad missions led by Ginger Miller, India Trip Coordinator, and Dr. Caryn Callahan, China Trip Coordinator and Professor of Finance and International Business. This is the 15th year the Hogan Program has sent students on entrepreneurial study missions to China and the 10th year to India. Support is provided by the Freeman Foundation, the J. Watumull Fund and, of course, the Hogan Family Foundation.

Hogan students are asked to raise funds to cover their own airfare.

China

The 2019 International Entrepreneurial Study Mission to China will include opportunities for Hogan students to visit sites of historic and cultural interests. Students will also intern with Chinese companies in Beijing and Shanghai, working under the direction of high-level managers at small and mid-size entrepreneurial companies. Internships this year include:

Fortune Connection Club (FC Club): a marketing event company which organizes promotional events for companies. They have offices in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong.

SEDA, LLC: a medium-size logistics company that offers expert services for international logistics and trading, as well as handling supply chain management and financing.

SMH International Trading: a marketing and consulting company that organizes promotional events for companies, and helps foreign companies enter the Chinese market.

RIS Laser: an organization which designs and manufactures industrial lasers.

India

The 2019 J. Watumull India Study Tour will include visits to Bangalore, Mysore, Agra, and New Delhi. The Hogan students will have an opportunity to witness first-hand how business is done and learn how culture and various religious rites have a huge impact on their daily lives. Company visits this year include:

The Ants Café and Shop: a shop that creates space for individuals to offer food items and display products to preserve and promote the social and economic wellbeing of weavers and craftspersons from rural villages. It works to instill gender equality, preserve traditional art forms, offer environmentally sustainable products, and conduct fair trade movement throughout production and sales.

Titan Industries: the world’s 5th largest watch manufacturer and India’s leading producer of watches under the Titan, Raga, Orion, Nebula and Octane brands. Titan Industries is known as an Indian luxury goods company and is a venture of the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation.

Infosys: an Indian multinational corporation that provides global business consulting, information technology and outsourcing services. Infosys is the second-largest Indian IT services company in the world, and the fifth largest employer of H-1B visa professionals in the U.S.

Chhanv Foundation: a meeting place for survivors of acid attacks on women. This is where they come to share their joy, sing, dance and joke, without revisiting their pain and anguish. Chhanv organizes training, workshops, counseling, and many other programs to support and facilitate the survivors.

Goonj Foundation: a non-governmental organization, which undertakes disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and community development in parts of 21 states across India. It recycles discarded clothes and household goods into useful products for the poor.

U.S. Commercial Service: the trade promotion arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. The U.S. Commercial Service provides professionals in over 100 U.S. cities and more than 75 countries to help U.S. companies get started in exporting to new global markets.

Special Gathering at the Residence of Louisa Cooper

January 31, 2019

Hogan gathering at Louisa Cooper's house
Louisa Cooper and Yukio Ozaki

A special gathering was hosted by Louisa Cooper at her lovely home in Pali.  She is a long-time supporter of the program and is an artist who has traveled the world acquiring impressions contributing to her creativity. Her late husband, Cliff Cooper, was a member of the Hogan Advisory Board. He was a pioneer in the rocket industry and is the author of the Runt Pig Principle. To show our gratitude for the many years they have accepted the program into their home, Louisa was presented with a special piece created by Yukio Ozaki, Chaminade Professor of Fine Arts.

Dae Han

Joining Louisa was Chaminade President, Lynn Babington, and guest speaker Dae Han, owner of Dae Han Ensemble. The festivities began with pupu, wine, and a special drink called Gazoz – a fizzy fruit beverage – personally made by Hogan student, Danielle Shemesh. Hogan students participating in this summer’s international study missions did some fundraising to help offset the cost of their airfare by selling succulent plants.

Afterward, entertainment was provided by Dae Han Ensemble. The members of the group were Dae Han, on drums, Chris Yeh, as the alto saxophonist, Elliot Maker, on keyboard and trumpet, Alex Morrison, on bass, and Amanda Frazier, as vocalist and guitarist.

Following the performance was a prayer lead by Brandon Hong, a business administration major from Hawaii. The evening ended with a raffle and guests walking through Louisa’s beautiful garden along the Nuuanu Stream.
