Students Reflect on MBA Experience

Graduating cohort members are excited to apply their new skills

Embrace the process—and cherish the time you have with your cohort.

That was a common piece of advice members of the Professional MBA graduating class had for incoming MBA students at a special Aloha Event on campus. The Sept. 14 event provided incoming and outgoing students an opportunity to share laughs, stories and, of course, some pearls of wisdom.

After more than two decades of being in the hotel and entertainment industry, Connie Kramer ’25 decided to pursue her Professional MBA at Chaminade, saying it had been a lifetime goal.

“Being in the program jarred my interest in academia,” says Kramer, who hopes to continue her Chaminade education by pursuing a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership for Adaptation and Change. “It crept up on me, even though academia is in the fabric of my family.”

Designed in an innovative, accelerated format, the one-year Professional MBA aims to advance the skills of those who already have years of business experience in their respective industries. The degree puts a strong focus on strategic decision-making, career advancement and entrepreneurial innovation.

Chaminade offers a Professional MBA along with a traditional two-year MBA program.

A defining feature of the 12-month curriculum is its “lockstep” structure, which means that all students take the required courses together—as a cohort. Lauren Hamrick ’25 said that helped her build her confidence, along with relationships that she hopes to keep as she advances her career.

“It’s amazing to look back to see what we’ve learned and how to apply those theories into real life circumstances,” she said.

A farmer and small business owner, Jon Watase ’25 said that with the help of the Professional MBA program, he was able to expand his website, grow his company’s presence and participate in the Made in Hawaii Festival. He also learned about accounting principles and strategic decision-making.

In a “Shark Tank”-style presentation, Watase even pitched his idea to a panel of professors and won a business competition. “I actually received funding, which helped my business grow,” Watase said.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without being a part of this cohort.”

Graduating students said one of the biggest benefits of the Professional MBA is its one-year timeframe.

Additionally, classes are held on alternating weeks and supplemented by online coursework, offering flexibility. “The faculty is amazing,” added Stacey Robinson ’25, adding that you can also learn lots from your peers “who will help you see the bigger picture.”

Another attractive selling point of the Professional MBA program is an international trip that’s full of hands-on learning opportunities. “The international field experience in Japan was the biggest seller for me,” said Kramer, who was recognized with the Outstanding Student Award. “We met with so many consequential leaders and had so many thought-provoking conversations.”

Training the Teacher: Financial Literacy

For a third year, this summer workshop at Chaminade sought to help teachers incorporate financial literacy principles into their classroom lessons.

For one week this July, 26 educators from across the island headed back to class at Chaminade.

They weren’t on campus to teach but to learn—as participants in Chaminade’s annual Economic Education Center for Excellence’s Summer Workshop, which ran from July 22 to 26.

Now in its third year, the workshop offers elementary to high school teachers innovative pedagogical instruction for incorporating key economic and finance principles into hands-on class lessons.

Attendee Daniel Quiamas heard about the summer workshop from a friend, Thomas Yeung, a teacher with Farrington High School’s Business Academy who attended last year’s series of workshops. Quiamas—a math teacher at Waipahu High—said after just two days that he had already learned new ways to incorporate economics and finance into his classroom instruction for ninth to 12th graders.

“I was never really taught about financial literacy so this workshop is very informative,” said Quiamas, after listening to Joanne Ching, a financial wellness partner with HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, which was one of the sponsors of this annual Summer Workshop and a strong proponent of financial literacy.

The ECCE’s summer workshop is taught with a combination of lectures, in-class games and group activities, hands-on projects and field classes. Organizers say the curriculum places an emphasis on real-life examples and situations, and includes economics and personal finance concepts based on the Hawaii Department of Education Social Studies Common Core standards.

Some of the key topics covered include market operations and government interventions, environmental economics, personal finance education and financial wellness.

Guanlin Gao, director of the Economic Education Center for Excellence and an associate professor of economics at Chaminade, said the ECCE’s mission is to advance economic justice in Hawaii and across the Pacific. In addition to offering educational programs for teachers, students and the community, the center tackles research projects that dovetail with its mission—and can help inform policy-making.

Gao said the program has so far trained 62 teachers who work in schools statewide. Its economic literacy curriculum and programs have positively benefited more than 7,400 Hawaii students.

“The importance of financial literacy and basic economic principles can’t be overstated,” Gao said.

“It impacts people’s everyday lives.”

The ECCE’s growing outreach efforts come amid a greater push nationally to underscore financial literacy in schools nationwide. According to the Council for Economic Education’s latest biennial Survey of the States, more than two-thirds of all states now require personal finance classes for high school graduation—a sharp increase from 2022 when fewer than half the states had such mandates.

On the last day of the five-day ECCE workshop, participants were asked to give a presentation on how they plan to incorporate what they’ve learned into their own classrooms. Some said they would use it as a “bell ringer,” devoting the first few minutes of class to financial literacy and personal finances. Others planned to take a more comprehensive approach, developing specific age-appropriate lesson plans.

Social studies teacher John Silang, a 10-year veteran with Kapolei High School’s Business Academy, attended the workshop aspiring to learn how to stop systemic poverty.

“I call it Adulting 101,” Silang said. “I wanted to learn how college educators teach economics and how they apply the theories in the classroom.”

For Gao, the moral imperative of teaching financial literacy is clear.

“We recognize that there is still much to be done to improve financial literacy in Hawaii. However, we take pride in our efforts to make a difference and establish ourselves as a center for economic education,” Gao said. “Financial literacy doesn’t have to be daunting or out of reach. It should be accessible to everyone. In reality, we all have innate economic instincts; you might just not be aware of them—yet.”

Annual Conference and Assembly Meeting

Judges Praise Silverswords for Their Creative Results

A 15-year participant in the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education’s (IACBE) Annual Conference and Assembly Meeting (ACAM)—which took place in Memphis, Tennessee this year—Chaminade University has consistently fared well against other mainland and international institutions, often winning several competitions or placing in the top three.

“As the coach, I help set up the teams and select the students who will compete in the Case Competition,” explained MBA Director and Program Advisor, Eddie Merc, Ph.D. “I oversee all the logistics for the trip, as well as help prepare the students to excel in their final presentation delivery.”

This year’s Spring 2024 IACBE’s Live Case Competition featured Tennessee-based organization Viralish, which set forth the challenge to students with this theme: “The 90 Day Creator: A Fast-Track Program and Planning Tool to Help Content Creators Generate $5,000 per Month.” The project tasked student teams to develop an innovative way for Viralish to help business owners and content creators monetize their digital content effectively. Among the participants from schools all around the U.S., Chaminade’s team included seniors Liz Devine, Alexander Hernandez, Ross Reeves and Kelsey Sablan. They were mentored by professors Wera Panow-Loui and Richard Kido. “The  team of four undergraduate business seniors delivered creative results that were actionable, unique and thought provoking,” according to the competition’s judges.

“Chaminade finished in third place, but I think our students had the most comprehensive business analysis of the company,” Merc said. “The synergy of the team was excellent, and they were proud of their research and their presentation delivery.”

The IACBE accredits business programs—including Chaminade’s—that lead to degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels in institutions of higher education nationwide and around the world. Specialized programmatic accreditation by the IACBE is a means by which students, parents, the business community and other stakeholders of the institution can be assured that the academic business unit complies with high principles of excellence and follows best practice in business education.

“The number one priority for attending the IACBE Competition and Conference is to stay in touch with students,” Merc said. “It allows me to gauge what our students excel in and the areas where we may have gaps in our curricula.

“It’s a great conference to determine if our program is up to date,” Merc added. “It’s also a good thermometer of current trends at business schools around the world and U.S.”

For the second consecutive year, Merc walked away with the top prize. And for the second year in a row, he hasn’t kept the winnings, instead donating the prize money to two local nonprofit organizations.

Merc’s first-place finishing poster competition at the IACBE’s ACAM looked at “The Role of Social Integration and Sense of Connectedness in Online Courses, and Their Influence on Learning and Academic Performance Among Military Students.”

“I wanted to focus on non-traditional students who were serving in the military and pursuing their degrees,” said Merc, who serves in the Hawai’i Air National Guard during weekends. “I myself was a non-traditional student when I was obtaining my doctorate in education, so I can definitely relate.”

Students in the Senior Field Experience Class helped organize an event to help high school students learn more about working in Hawaii’s tourism industry, yet the experience resulted with the Chaminade students becoming inspired themselves by the people they encountered.

One of 16 students with the University’s School of Business and Communication Senior Field Experience class, Elizabeth Devine ’24  helped organize and lead an event that was both high-energy and deep-diving. The event was the Exposure Fair at the Hawaii Convention Center, which opened doors to the tourism industry and post secondary opportunities for more than 550 high school students. The fair was a highlight of LEI (Leadership Exploration Inspiration) 2024, which brought public high school students from 20 schools to the Hawaii Convention Center on April 22. 

LEI is a partnership between ClimbHI and the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), and is a workforce development project that aims to inspire Hawaii’s youth to select careers in the Hawaii visitor industry by providing them with the necessary means to achieve success. For students, LEI represents an opportunity for leadership, exploration and inspiration. For the hospitality industry, LEI provides an opportunity to Lead, Expose and Inspire Hawaii’s youth.  In addition to Oahu, LEI 2024 events took place on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, and included more than 100 businesses.

“Participating in the 2024 LEI Program was an enriching experience on multiple fronts,” said Gabriela Galarza ’24. “Not only did it prove beneficial for the local high school students involved, but it also left a lasting impact on all of us who coordinated the event.”

At the Exposure Fair, students heard guest speakers—such as Gov. Josh Green, ClimbHi Founder Julie Morikawa and Hawaii Tourism Authority Board Chair Mufi Hannemann—and attended Hawaiian culture and sense of place presentations. They also took field trips to different hotels for an overview of the hotel industry, including a dining etiquette piece for lunch. Students then returned to the Hawaii Convention Center for the career Exposure Fair, during which they heard from various representatives from the hospitality industry, as well as post-secondary education opportunities.

“Having this opportunity really helped me gain a better understanding and perspective of how to attack my future and find a job, wherever it may be,” Devine said. “Overall I am grateful for the experience, and I am glad I got the opportunity to work with ClimbHI and such a great group of classmates”

No wonder these Chaminade business students came away from class with such positive experiences. Their teacher, Dr. Wendy Lam, is an Associate Professor of Business and has been teaching since 1986. She has more than 20 years of professional experience in food manufacturing and retail business with clients from major airlines and hotels. She also conducts training programs and prepares marketing plans for major corporations in the United States.

Teaching is more than a career to her. It is her life passion. Lam has presented at various domestic and international conferences, and published in the field of tourism, marketing and education. She is active in the business community and serves as a board member of several nonprofit organizations in Honolulu.

“It was amazing to learn from the local companies here on the island,” said Ross Reeves ’24, Silversword Male Athlete of the Year. “Graduating this May, I am thankful to have heard from experts in different industries. The main takeaway I learned was to not overstress the job search and to do what you love. The businesses emphasized that when you do what you love, you are going to be good at what you do because of the passion that you have.”

Business Olympics

Annual Games Challenge High School Students

Let the mental gymnastics begin. In 20 minutes, teams had to build the tallest free-standing structure, using only spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string and one marshmallow, which needed to sit on top. During this “Marshmallow Challenge,” sitting on one side of the room, the Spartan, Trojan and Athenian teams from Maryknoll School and Nanakuli High & Intermediate School talked about teamwork, listening, communication and trust. On the other side, Silverswords spoke of flexibility, creativity and open-mindedness.

“The Marshmallow Challenge is used a lot in business schools,” said assistant professor Eddie Merc, Ph.D., Chaminade’s MBA Director and Program Advisor. “The participants learn about team building and how to adapt if your design isn’t working.”

The contest was just one of many during the Third Annual Business Olympics, which is organized by the School of Business and Communications. As part of his operations management class, MvFaden Iriarte ’25 was among the Silversword participants in the Marshmallow Challenge.

“There was only one rule: your finished structure had to sit on the slippery surface of a desk,” explained Iriarte, as he pointed to their design, which won the challenge for being the tallest. “I was really impressed with what the high-school kids came up, and how they worked together and listened to each other.”

Now in its third year, the Business Olympics combines Merc’s efforts to reach out to high schools and his athletic background as a former collegiate tennis player. The event features five different stations or “challenges” that cover various subjects, including business fundamentals, management and teamwork, accounting and finance, marketing and a “Mini Shark” presentation.

“The event provided them insights of what topics they would study in business school,” said Kit-U Wong, Maryknoll’s Social Science and English Dean of Academics. “They especially appreciated being able to ask questions to Chaminade University professors and getting great advice. I would love for future students to get the chance to participate.”

Interim Dean Annette Santos was one of the four Mini Shark panel members, who listened and judged the five-minute business pitches. One team’s entrepreneurial idea was to develop a new eczema cream; another was to sell a protein ice cream after working out; and the third was to build a soundproof dog house.

“It’s quite impressive what students can come up within five minutes—really impressive,” Santos said. “It was a successful Business Olympics event and a wonderful opportunity to bring students to campus, engage with our faculty, and create memorable experiences that we hope will bring them back.”

Nanakuli High High School junior Vai and his freshman sister Saeota Fanuaea were encouraged by their mom, Rosa Fanuaea who attended Chaminade her freshman year, to join the Business Olympics event, telling them that this would be a good opportunity to visit the beautiful campus. Walking from the Sullivan Family Library to Hale Hoaloha, the siblings took in all the scenery, admiring the buildings and views.

“So far we’ve learned about team building,” said Saeota Fanuaea, after competing in the Marshmallow Challenge. “Our next class is accounting and finance, which I am looking forward to learning about.”

While the Trojans may have taken gold in the Mini Shark presentation, the Spartans and Athenians were also winners in their own sense. Maryknoll senior Ethan Hendricks felt he had already won after learning about SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis.

“My mom has her own business, Alinea Jewelry, and I want to help her with her marketing, which is so old school right now,” said Hendricks, with a boyish grin. “I already learned about some business concepts today, which I never knew about. I can now use that knowledge when I run my mom’s marketing.”

“I’m happy Ethan is exploring different avenues to educate himself about business and marketing,” said mom Andromeda Hendricks. “I support his endeavors and I think he is in good hands there at Chaminade.”

Sustainable Entrepreneurship

New ENV 490 Sustainability Innovation class stimulates paradigm shift

Aside from being tongue twisters when said in succession, the terms sustainability and entrepreneurship are indeed big words, as pointed out by ’Inana Sustainability Entrepreneurship Program’s coordinator, Mariane Uehara. Tasked with creating a curriculum for the inaugural ENV 490 Sustainability Innovation course, Uehara admitted that she “jumped into the unknown” when she joined the United Nations’s CIFAL Center at Chaminade University.

At the core of the ENV 490 is a student-driven project that’s in partnership with a local company. The goal was to balance the triple bottom line—people, planet and profit—while addressing the long-term impact of business activities on the environment and society. Sustainable entrepreneurship recognizes the interdependence of economic development, social well-being and environmental health, and seeks to create value in a way that is responsible and ethical.

“All the students’ projects had to align with at least one of the United Nations’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Uehara explained. “Although the vision was blurry at first, we figured out the puzzle together, and we had fun while doing so.”

According to Uehara, the three goals of the ’Inana Program are: 1) To develop and implement programs for the education and training of undergraduate students in subjects directly relating to successful entrepreneurship; 2) To support minority business enterprises (MBEs), including building a diverse entrepreneurial pipeline to grow the number of MBEs; and 3) to create a UN Certificate program in sustainability entrepreneurship.

Divided into three teams, 14 students presented their final entrepreneurial projects, working alongside with Ten Tomorrow, Re-use Hawaii and Plantoem. Under the mentorship of Uehara, and Cort Isernhagen and Jamie Lui of Diamond Head Research—a company that helps small companies track and assess their activities to identify trends and innovative business models that best support Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance, and philanthropic initiatives—the aspiring entrepreneurs demonstrated their ability to think outside the box.

“First of all, who are you guys,” rhetorically asked Lui after listening to the students’ presentations. “You’re a completely different group from when we started this class a few months ago.”

Exuding confidence, Sarah Carroll ’25 proposed a “Hanau Hana Aloha Event,” which would advertise Re-use Hawai’i as a community-based nonprofit worthy of long-term patronage and donation. Additionally, it would also pose these solutions: Engage an eco-conscious audience; showcase Re-use Hawaii’s mission beyond social media; and connect with long-term donors through a captivating experience.

“Hosting an upcycle consignment event for Re-use Hawaii would present an innovative solution to address several pressing challenges,” the Data Science and Visualization major said. “It would help Re-Use connect with the community and give it more visibility, as well as broaden its donor pool.”

Other Re-use Hawaii members included Katherine “Kat” Liu ’26, Sano Tanna ’24, Lihau Keoneula ’24 and Kaila Frank ’24.

Pairing with Ten Tomorrow designer Summer Shiigi, Jasmine Mondelo ’25, Ka‘I‘inipu‘uwai “Mini” Keli‘iho‘omalu-Holz ’24, Lyla Gonsalves ’25 and LaVelle White ’26 aligned their entrepreneurial proposals with the local clothing company’s line of modern resort wear. An Environmental Studies major, Keli‘iho‘omalu-Holz identified the problem of having to bring in fabric, which contributes to carbon emissions, microplastics and landfills.

Keli‘iho‘omalu-Holz’s solution was to source fabric that would be less harmful to the environment. She cited such alternatives as hemp, organic cotton, bamboo, recycled material and Tencel fabrics, which are produced with environmentally responsible processes from sustainably sourced natural raw wood fibers. Tencel textiles are also certified biodegradable.

“I have a really keen interest in fashion, which is why I chose Ten Tomorrow ,” Keli‘iho‘omalu-Holz noted. “I wanted to find cost-effective solutions and sustainable fabrics that didn’t have a negative impact on our environment.”

Alexandra Zingarelli ’24, Sydney Danielson ’25, Pūnohu Keahi ’25, Aleeyah Lemons ’24 and Conor McMahon ’24 partnered with Zoe Zhang of Plantoem, a portmanteau of plant and poem, and suggested a “Plantoem’s Appreciation March 2024.” Each week would tackle a different aspect, from the significance of native plants and “Aloha ʻĀina: Environmental Health Talk Story Event” to carbon offset, plant therapy and sustainable living workshops.

“They really listened to what I had to say,” said Zhang, who founded Plantoem because of her love for plants and poetry. “Their proposal to me is highly viable. Since we came up with the awareness month idea during their second visit, I have already been in touch with some of the speakers who are interested in participating. The basic structure of the event month has already been sketched out. And the students are coming back to help work on the events in March.”

In his closing remarks, Isernhagen commented on the diversity of ideas and the prototypes the students developed. “I liked the fact that you met the businesses where they were,” he concluded. “Your lenses were all sharply focused around sustainability. And I liked the fact that you collectively approached one problem but each of you came up with your own individual solution.”
