Rapid-Response Nursing Skills Reinforced at Crisis Management Boot Camp

The School of Nursing at Chaminade University hosted the Crisis Management Boot Camp (CMBC) for 24 senior nursing students during their NUR 499 Clinical Immersion course recently. Facilitated by registered nurses who practice in the acute care, intensive care, and rapid response team areas affiliated with the Hawaiian Islands Chapter of the American Association of Critical-care Nurses (HIC-AACN), the CMBC provided an educational simulation experience that facilitated recognizing a crisis and performing the necessary interventions promptly. Held in the E. L. Wiegand Simulation Suite on April 6, the boot camp provided essential practice in crisis management scenarios that the seniors at the School of Nursing would probably not see during their clinical rotations.

The registered nurses served as altruistic role models of the nursing profession and the nursing community of Hawaii for the students. Julie Gamboa, a passionate advocate who finds opportunities for students to practice critical situations that could never be practiced safely in the real world, coordinated the CMBC event.

Initially many of the students felt overwhelmed by the intensity and “the steep learning curve” of the experience. “But all of the teachers were warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and understanding. They shared an immense amount of information with all of us and instilled a new sense of confidence in myself. Learning from their immense collection of knowledge was priceless,” noted Chaminade senior Stephanie Lum.

Chaminade School of Nursing Simulation Coordinator Jeanette Peterson eagerly collaborated with HIC-AACN because of the valuable experience the boot camp would provide for the students. Assisted by Chaminade alumni Lynette Agcaoili BSN ’16 and Talia Rose BSN ’16, the School of Nursing collaborated with HIC-AACN to hold the event at Chaminade for the second year in a row.

“Practice comes with proficiency, and this is true with crisis management. This boot camp reinforced and expanded my knowledge about critical care. I learned new concepts which I can apply to my clinical immersion. I learned new skills like using a defibrillator and gained an assertive attitude when advocating for my patients,” remarked senior Glenn Gamponia.

Nursing students learning about crisis managementMatthew Labuguen, also a senior in the School of Nursing, felt that the day allowed him to understand better how to bridge together what he had learned from didactic into clinical practice. “I learned a new way of processing assessments and how to better approach situations such as organizing my information to figure out root causes so that I can effectively address problems in a safe and timely manner,” he recalled. “This experience allowed me to be a part of crisis situations and actively think things out without the worry of harming a patient or feeling incompetent. I appreciated and am grateful for this experience.”

After the simulation debriefing this year, Chaminade nursing students were asked to write a reflection on the impact of the event on their future nursing practice.  The reflections were overwhelmingly appreciative of the time and opportunity to interact with the practicing nurse professionals.  On the simulation evaluation survey, the students consistently expressed the abilities to ask questions in a safe environment along and to clarify knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

“I learned so much about nursing that I didn’t know before. I also learned a lot about myself as a person and the type of nurse I want to be,” shared Chaminade senior Arielle Regis. “I learned always to ask myself why I’m doing an intervention in order to know whether it is appropriate, justified, and beneficial for the patient. I also learned that as a nurse, I have an obligation to advocate for my patient regardless of what anyone else says or thinks. Another important thing I learned is that nursing is teamwork. It’s more than okay to ask for help. As a matter of fact, it’s vital to patient care and will save their life.”

The event provided an opportunity for Chaminade’s soon-to-be graduates to work side by side with their future RN peers and helped prepare them to be workforce ready.

School of Nursing Crisis Management Boot Camp

Chaminade’s School of Nursing is a four year, full-time undergraduate program that offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The unique program immerses students in nursing preparation with educational curriculum, human-patient simulations, community outreach projects, and service-learning and supervised clinical experiences. The curriculum for our undergraduates program is consistent with the Baccalaureate Essentials of Nursing produced by the American Association of Collegiate Nursing. The nursing program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Tokyo Healthcare University and Chaminade’s School of Nursing Collaborate

The School of Nursing welcomed students and faculty members from Tokyo Healthcare University on March 17 to a cultural and inter-professional exchange. The collaboration has been ongoing since 2012. Assistant professor and simulation coordinator Jeanette Peterson was the lead faculty member this year and facilitated the simulation event. She has been involved with the intercultural experience since the beginning, providing a high-quality simulation lab experience for the visiting students.

This year, 23 Tokyo Healthcare students participated.  Their disciplines included health Informatics, clinical nutrition, and nursing. Peterson developed a scenario in which the visiting student nurses in all three disciplines could participate and learn about best practices with simulation. She and the Tokyo Healthcare faculty have collaborated since last October on the scenario.

“The interaction between students from both schools is more than a cultural exchange and learning about nursing in each of their cultures,” said Edna Magpantay-Monroe, chief nursing administrator and associate professor at the School of Nursing at Chaminade University. “Nursing as a profession has really looked at global health education, and this interaction provides for global health education. When nursing students in any part of the world understand cultural literacy, they can provide patient-centered care anywhere.”

The visiting students completed their simulation experience totally in Japanese, which took place in the E.L. Wiegand Simulation Suite. The Tokyo Healthcare faculty acted as patients and also observed the performance rubric. Learning objectives focused on principles of inter-professional communication.  The visiting faculty with Peterson’s assistance debriefed the students in Japanese.

Student volunteers from Chaminade’s School of Nursing assisted the visiting group with skills, labs and equipment needed for the simulation. The students from both nursing schools also participated in a cultural exchange, listened to planned speakers and shared a meal together. Chaminade student Jaimee Sambrano, scheduled to graduate in 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing, served as the lead planner for Chaminade’s School of Nursing.“This event promoted student collaboration and leadership and increased our cultural awareness,” Sambrano said.

Yuka Garo, Clinical Credentialing assistant with Chaminade’s School of Nursing said, “I personally believe that this partnership benefits both Tokyo Healthcare University and Chaminade University nursing students to better understand the dynamic of interpersonal communication and its importance.”

Chaminade Now Accepting Applications for Ho’oulu STEM Scholarships

Chaminade University is currently accepting applications for its full-tuition Ho`oulu STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Scholarships. The scholarships are open to first-year and transfer students and give preference to applicants of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Apply now for early consideration. In partnership with Kamehameha Schools, Chaminade University created an opportunity for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree to receive full tuition assistance (100%) and the opportunity to apply for living expense assistance for four years. It also provides wraparound academic support services, access to post-graduate career paths via Chaminade’s suite of articulation agreements, paid internships for professional development, and financial support for career development activities.

Hooulu STEM Scholarship, First Cohort

In the fall of 2016, Chaminade University welcomed its first Ho`oulu cohort of first-year and transfer students in the following Bachelor of Science degree areas: Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Sciences, Environmental Studies, Nursing, and Pre-Med/Pre-Health.

“The impact of Ho`oulu is far-reaching,” said Chaminade President Bro. Bernard J. Ploeger, SM, Ph.D. “Careers in STEM-related fields are projected to be some of the fastest growing segments of tomorrow’s workforce.”

Chaminade’s Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Helen Turner, Ph.D. agreed. “Solutions to health, environmental and justice challenges are to be found in science and technology, and we envision Ho‘oulu students leading the community in the future to strengthen the lāhui.”

The Culture of Health Learned through the Lo‘i

While others were meandering through shopping malls on their annual holiday hunt, Eurina Kee, Ph.D. and 12 public health students from her Nursing 401 class were trudging through mud. Seven family members accompanied them into the wet outback. Instead of pulling items from sales’ tables, they were pulling weeds, clearing grass, and cleaning water sources. Rather than preparing gifts for wrapping at Ala Moana Center near Waikiki, they instead prepared a wetland kalo patch (lo‘i) for planting in Waialua on the North Shore of Oahu.

And they loved it! “It was my first time to crack a coconut, and it was fun,” said senior BSN student, Maria Talana.

The students were invigorated by the physical experience combined with the underlying academic purpose of the service-learning activity. The muddy, six-hour field expedition on Saturday, November 26, was the first time that Chaminade public health nursing students were invited to participate in the wetland experience.

They learned about public health nursing through caring for the land (mālama `āina) while working alongside Joan Takamori, chief of the Public Health Nursing Branch for Hawaii’s Department of Health. Takamori explained that Hawaii’s public health nurses listened and responded to community needs, based on professional knowledge and relationships with individuals, families, and communities. The Public Health Nursing Branch was an expansion of the Department of Health into all communities statewide. Priorities included emergency preparedness and response, control of communicable diseases, school health, elder health, and health promotion in high-risk populations. As a public health nurse before her leadership role, Takamori helped provide public health nursing services in Central Oahu, primarily in Wahiawa, Waialua, and Haleiwa.

As the Chaminade group labored in the lo‘i, the students discussed the culture of health and the value of being connected to community leaders. According to Kee, students were given a sense of place as they learned from the land. They “talked story” about the relationship between public health, community, and culture.

“It is important for public health nursing students to understand community health needs, know available community resources and be involved in efforts to preserve natural resources. It is also very valuable to discuss current public health issues with leaders such as Joan Takamori,” explained Kee.

Senior BSN students, Rebecca Maxey and Jeramae Marcellano agreed.

“Joan inspired me a lot,” recalled Marcellano. “Now I am so proud of my mom who has been a public health nurse in the Philippines for many years.”

Maxey concurred. “The experience was very educational, and it was an inspiring moment to listen to Joan speak about the community and her passion,” she reflected.

Throughout the coming year, there will be at least three more field sessions in the next three sections of Nursing 401. Consider them choice gifts of experience.

Chaminade’s Student Nurses Association Served More than a Side Dish at Thanksgiving

December 9, 2016

It was the annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Lunch at Neal Blaisdell Arena on November 24, with 800 volunteers serving 2000 people in need.  Most of the volunteers served the holiday guests a traditional Thanksgiving meal — mashed potatoes, roasted turkey, cranberries, stuffing, rolls, cooked vegetables, salad and, of course, pumpkin pie.

However, 30 of those volunteers, all members of Chaminade’s Student Nurses Association (SNA), were on a different mission. The student volunteers offered blood pressure screenings, serving more than 150 people before the door to the dining area even opened. Dressed in their Chaminade logo shirts, they shared on healthy lifestyle habits and assisted at the first aid station. Several senior citizens who had high blood pressure were directed to see their primary care physician as soon as possible by the nursing faculty. “I was surprised that many elders were not aware of how to care for their blood pressure,” said Lena Souza, SNA senior student member.

This was the School of Nursing’s second year at this event. Chaminade SNA advisor and assistant professor, Eurina Yujin-Cha Kee, Ph.D, RN, MSN, CRRN organized the service project. Last year, the volunteer group was limited to nursing students in Kee’s public health nursing section. Opening the opportunity up to include SNA members allowed for more participation.

Kee and her students have found this community service to be meaningful. “Serving people in the community is our Chaminade mission and the School of Nursing’s mission,” Kee remarked. “And sharing our love and ‘ohana with people in need is SBA’s community service goal as well.”

Kee added, “I will support this event every year.”

Her students and the guests at next year’s Salvation Army Thanksgiving Lunch will be glad to hear that.

School of Nursing Alumni Return to Network

December 1, 2016

One evening in late November, nearly 50 Chaminade graduates and seniors gathered at Henry Hall Courtyard for School of Nursing’s second annual alumni mixer.

Alumni from the classes of 2014, 2015 and 2016 along with seniors from the class of 2017 met with representatives from seven clinical sites including Ka Punawai Ola Rehab Facility, Hawaii Pacific Health, Navy Nurse, Leahi and Maluhia Hospital, the Hawaii Department of Health, Express Healthcare Professional and Hale Nani. Attracted by the job networking opportunities, the participants listened intently to the descriptions and needs of each of the sites. All sites offered job possibilities for the graduates and soon-to-be graduates.

Later participants heard from Honza Hroch, representing CreativeNurse.  Hroch presented on managing finances including student loans.  His presentation was tailored to help guide nurses and recent graduates with their financial concerns.

The event culminated with a rich mentoring session between alumni and seniors. The attendees were broken into smaller groups for roundtable discussions where alumni could share their experiences with seniors, as well as answer any questions. For the dean of the School of Nursing, Gwenevere Anderson, and her faculty, Denise Cooper, Julie Elting, Denise Hackman, Eurina Kee, Edna Magpantay-Monroe and Julieta Rosado, it was fulfilling to reconnect with former students and to see these former students pass their wisdom forward to the seniors.

Chaminade University accepted its first cohort into its School of Nursing in fall 2010. That first cohort graduated in spring 2014, with two more graduating cohorts following each spring. The mission of the Chaminade University of Honolulu School of Nursing embraces the key elements of education and service. Specifically, it is to educate students “…to be competent and caring nursing professionals who will promote health and high standards of practice, decrease health-related disparities in society, and enhance the quality of life for their patients in a dynamic health care environment.”
