Chaminade University Now Accepting Applications for Four-Year Scholarship Program

HONOLULU (January 23, 2020) – Chaminade University is now accepting applicants for its Ho‘oulu Scholarship program for Native Hawaiian students. Developed in partnership with Kamehameha Schools, the program was designed to grow the number of Native Hawaiians graduating with science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees.

The four-year scholarship is open to first-year and transfer applicants seeking degrees in Biology; Biochemistry; Chemistry; Data Science, Analytics and Visualization; Environmental Sciences; Environmental Studies; Forensic Sciences; and Nursing. The scholarship provides:

  • Full tuition (100 percent of tuition not to exceed the published amount) assistance for four years
  • Consideration for partial housing subsidy for on- or off-campus housing for neighbor island or rural students
  • Wraparound academic support services to promote on-time graduation
  • Participation in Chaminade’s four-year graduation guarantee
  • Access to post-graduate career paths via Chaminade’s suite of articulation agreements with medical and graduate schools
  • Paid internships for professional development
  • Financial support for career development activities, such as MCAT and GRE preparation

Now in its fifth year, the Ho‘oulu Scholarship gives preference to applicants of Native Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law. To date, 125 students have received Ho‘oulu scholarships at Chaminade.

“We’re extremely proud of the Ho‘oulu program at Chaminade,” said President Dr. Lynn Babington. “Both our persistence and four-year graduation rates are close to 100 percent for these scholars, who not only receive financial aid but more importantly intensive wraparound academic support services to help them succeed.”

Celebrating Years of Service

Chaminade faculty and staff gathered earlier this month for some holiday fare and fun – and to recognize dozens of colleagues celebrating years of service milestones.

Among those honored: Dr. David Coleman, a professor of Religious Studies at Chaminade, who has served at the institution for 45 years.

Dr. John Steelquist, professor of Operations Research, was recognized for 35 years at Chaminade.

And two members of the University ‘ohana are celebrating 30 years at Chaminade: Dr. Chock Wong, an associate professor of Mathematics, and Librarian Valerie Coleman.

Chaminade’s annual faculty and staff Christmas celebration is one of the few times during the year that team members from across the institution are able to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

The end-of-the-year luncheon is also a time for reflection – as faculty and staff members recall the accomplishments of the past year and the big goals for the year ahead.

Graduate and Online Undergraduate Scholarships

Chaminade University Introduces New Scholarships for Incoming Students

HONOLULU, HAWAII (December 2, 2019) – As part of its commitment to improve the community through education, Chaminade University has introduced new scholarships for incoming students. The University will award $5,000 scholarships to new students who wish to pursue master’s degrees or online bachelor’s degrees in eligible programs.

“The legacy of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade is one that embraces education as a way to change society and ensure a community of justice and reconciliation,” said Dr. Lynn Babington, President of Chaminade University. “These new scholarships will enable new students to contribute to the fabric of Hawaii in honor of our longstanding tradition and commitment to improve the communities in which we live and serve.”

The $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to new full-time students. Among the eligible master’s degrees are teaching, business administration, education, criminal justice administration, and pastoral theology. The scholarships for bachelor’s students are exclusively for online programs and span a wide range of majors.

To apply, applicants are asked to explain how they serve the community when completing their scholarship applications. The deadline to apply for Winter 2020 is December 20, 2019, and the deadline for Spring 2020 is March 20, 2020. The scholarship is available to new students only and cannot be combined with existing institutional partnerships or agreements.

In addition to expanding its incoming student scholarships, Chaminade University continues to provide a variety of other scholarships including many endowed awards for current students. This provides eligible students the opportunity for financial support beyond the first few terms and well into the completion of their program.

Putting Down “Roots”: PsyD Program is Here to Stay

The next time you walk by Brogan Hall, look for the young kukui nut tree on the building’s mauka end. 

The tree — traditionally a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual guidance — was planted to celebrate the new permanent home of the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology degree program at the Hawaii School of Professional Psychology at Chaminade University.

The program’s faculty, staff and students attended the tree planting on November 6.

Dr. Sean Scanlan, director of Chaminade’s Psy.D. program, said the kukui nut is the perfect representation of the Clinical Psychology program at Chaminade. He added that the tree was planted following a suggestion from a student in a place where it will have lots of room to grow.

“The kukui tree was used by Native Hawaiians for candlelight and has become an emblem of the importance of seeking out opportunities for personal and academic growth,” Scanlan said. “As a symbol of enlightenment, the kukui tree we’ve planted at Brogan Hall will continue to grow and thrive in the years and decades ahead just as the Clinical Psychology program will flourish at Chaminade into the future.”

During the small ceremony, the students added soil to cover the kukui tree’s roots as a symbol of being the basis for the program to grow. The Psy.D. faculty and staff then poured water from an ipu as a symbol of their role in instructing, mentoring and supporting the students.

In March, Chaminade University announced it would host the Hawaii School of Professional Clinical Psychology Psy.D. program following the abrupt closure of Argosy University. Chaminade immediately welcomed approximately 100 students and faculty members into the program as it worked to ensure a seamless transition for those working toward their doctoral degree – and those helping them get there.

Today, the Psy.D. at Chaminade is a five-year, intensive program designed to build students’ skills and knowledge as they train to become clinical psychologists. Early courses in the program provide the foundation for the field, while later classes focus on therapy, research training and an internship.

Dr. Lynn Babington, Chaminade president, said serving as a hub for high-quality mental health instruction – and a source for excellent mental health providers who will serve their communities – is in line with the University’s mission to work every day to change the world for the better.

“The planting of the kukui nut tree at Brogan Hall is a powerful symbol that underscores our commitment to ensuring the Psy.D. program at Chaminade continues to grow and meet the mental health needs of our state,” she said. “We are excited about the next steps in building out this program and can’t wait to see how psychologists trained at Chaminade impact people’s lives in positive ways.”

Director of Campus Ministry

You might not think surfing and campus ministry go together.

But that probably means you haven’t met Jeremiah Carter yet.

Carter is the new director of Campus Ministry at Chaminade, and he says one of his priorities this academic year is to launch outreach activities that attract more members of the University community.

“I’m looking to try some new activities that incorporate the beauty of creation and spirituality,” he said.

So to Carter, a campus ministry-sponsored surfing outreach event makes a lot of sense. “We’re fortunate to have strong traditional faith values and growing at Chaminade,” he added. “And we hope to incorporate that in creative ways as they relate to the modern world.”

It’s little surprise, then, that one of Carter’s favorite quotes is: “New times call for new methods.”

Those words are attributed to none other than Father Chaminade, the University’s namesake.

Since joining Chaminade just before the start the 2019-20 academic year, Carter says he’s been encouraged and inspired by how departments and programs across campus seek to offer students a “holistic experience,” focusing on not just academics but on personal and spiritual growth, too.

Carter said he was particularly moved by Chaminade’s new student orientation for this fall, which included a welcome in the Mystical Rose Oratory and was followed by an ecumenical prayer. “It was for all new students to Chaminade. And with so many of us working together, I believe it was a great example to them in the spirit of building community that we strive for here,” he said.

Carter didn’t have to travel far to accept his new position at Chaminade. He comes to the University from Damien Memorial School, where he was a religion instructor. Before that, Carter was a seminarian and earned two master’s degrees at Indiana’s Saint Menrad School of Theology.

Looking ahead, Carter said he’s excited to broaden the impact of Campus Ministry.

One way he and his colleagues are building community: By blessing departments, offices, student residence halls and other gathering spots on campus. He’s even thinking about a “blessing of the cars.”

“My personal goal is to build, inspire and nurture a supportive ecumenical community of believers, strive to transform students grounded in Catholic tradition and help prepare them to make lasting contributions for our local and global communities,” Carter said. “I’m blessed to be here.”
