Strengthen Literacy. Expand Your Impact.

The K–6 Structured Literacy Certificate equips educators with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach literacy through a balance of theory and practice. Grounded in the science of reading and responsive to the needs of Hawai‘i’s keiki, the program prepares you to apply evidence-based strategies in real classroom settings.

Earn your certificate by completing coursework and passing the KPEERI exam, with the option to continue seamlessly into the Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction Leadership program.

10-week terms, four terms per year

Accelerated Fall Term Begins: October 5, 2026
Application Deadline: September 4, 2026

Accelerated Winter Term Begins: January 11, 2027

Program Details

Upon completion of the K-6 Structured Literacy Certificate program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of literacy development and applies evidence-based instructional practices to support foundational reading, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing across developmental stages for K-6 learners.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate differentiated literacy instruction and interventions that address the diverse needs of students, including multilingual learners and students with dyslexia, using evidence-based decision-making for K-6 learners
  3. Effectively communicate literacy assessment results, instructional practices, and intervention strategies to students, families, and colleagues to promote collaborative, developmentally appropriate literacy support for K-6 learners.

  • Successful completion of the KPEERI Assessment

Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

Chaminade University has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a nationally recognized agency for accreditation of post-secondary institutions in its area of the United States.

General Admission Requirements

  • Completed Chaminade application
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the U.S., or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution*
  • Official college transcripts
  • Current professional resume
  • Two (2) references

Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction Leadership

Earn your MA in Curriculum and Instruction Leadership (MACIL) and K–6 Structured Literacy Certificate concurrently. By integrating the Certificate requirements into the MACIL coursework, you can earn your master’s degree and certificate—100% online in 15 months.
