Biography
Dr. Mary E. Smith, Professor of Special Education received her B.A. in English from Fairfield University, Connecticut, M.S. Special Education from Wagner College, NY and her Ph.D. in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia. Her background in education is varied and extensive. She is a certified Montessori teacher and has worked in both private and public Montessori schools in New York and Maryland. Dr. Smith has worked in the special education field, working at the Lab School of Washington, DC. and in public schools in Hawaii. She has collaborated on research endeavors with the Virginia Department of Education, Albemarle County, VA and the University of Virginia. At Chaminade, Dr. Smith is a member of the Education Advisory Committee and assists with the special education program. Professional interests include teacher education, early intervention for at-risk students, learning disabilities and differentiation.
