OSP Spotlight

NOAA-B-WET Grant
Thanks to grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], Katrina Roseler, Ph.D. and Environmental Sciences assistant professor Lupita Ruiz-Jones, Ph.D., enhanced Hawaii’s secondary science teachers’ ability to engage students in ahupua’a education and promote stewardship. An ahupua’a is a traditional Hawaiian land division, typically extending from mountain to shore and following a stream drainage. The summer workshops support NOAA’s Bay Watershed Education (B-WET) initiative, which promotes experiential learning for K-12 students and professional development for teachers. Read more about it here.

Title III Grant
Thanks to Title III funding, three classrooms have been renovated to enhance active and collaborative learning. Staff of the Center for Teaching and Learning provide continual individual instruction for faculty on the effective use of equipment and software to increase student motivation and engagement. Renovations include the addition of touchscreen monitors, whiteboards, smart projectors, and desktops with installed dry-erase boards. The focus of all room configurations is to increase student collaborative learning and to support pedagogy that integrates multiple learning styles.
