As a special education teacher, you have the opportunity to change what’s possible for students with diverse learning needs. Chaminade’s Special Education program prepares you to create inclusive, engaging learning environments where every student can grow and thrive.

Through hands-on experiences, personalized faculty mentorship and a strong foundation in teaching and learning, you’ll develop the skills to meet students where they are, recognize their strengths and help them reach their potential. The BS in Special Education 3+1 Program is for students transferring from Leeward Community College. It is designed to prepare you for special education careers in diverse and multicultural schools. Graduates of this program can be licensed to teach Special Education K-12, PK-3, K-6, or 6-12.

Upon completion of the undergraduate B.S. program in Special Education, students will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of learner development, learner differences, diverse students and the learning environment to optimize learning for SPED students.
  2. Describe central concepts, tools of inquiry and structures of the subject matter disciplines for SPED students.
  3. Utilize formative and summative assessments, to determine, select, and implement effective instructional strategies for SPED students.
  4. Analyze the history, values, commitments, and ethics of the teaching profession within the school community.
  5. Explain the Marianist tradition of providing an integral, quality education within diverse learning communities.

In addition to the general education requirements, these are the pre-major and major requirements below:

Required Coursework

Students transferring from Leeward Community College must have completed a prescribed set of courses before transferring to Chaminade. Completion of 120 credits is required for the 3+1 BS in SPED. For courses to be considered transferable, they must be 100-level or higher and you must have earned a grade of C or higher. During your senior year at Chaminade, students will need to complete 33 upper-division credits: 21 credits of coursework (7 courses at CUH, 2 required, 5 recommended), and 12 credits of student teaching/seminar.

  • Five (5) Upper Division Elective Courses

We recommend the following electives as part of the SPED program:

  • ED 326 Exceptional Children
  • ED 401 SPED: Assessment & Instruction
  • ED 402 SPED: Language & Communication Disabilities
  • ED 403 SPED: Children with Disabilities

Meet content knowledge requirement through passing scores for Praxis II or subject-credit eligibility requirements per HTSB guidelines.
