The Montessori Method puts children at the center of learning, encouraging discovery, independence and hands-on exploration. Rather than simply providing answers, Montessori educators guide children as they develop the confidence and skills to find solutions for themselves.

Chaminade’s bachelor’s degree in education with a Montessori credential prepares you to teach children ages 2½ to 6 in Montessori environments. You’ll learn to create child-centered classrooms that support social, emotional and cognitive development while meeting rigorous Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education standards and Hawaiʻi’s early childhood education requirements. Graduates are prepared to teach in Montessori schools across Hawaiʻi and beyond.

Upon completion of the undergraduate B.S. program in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of learner development, learner differences, diverse students, and the learning environment to optimize learning for Early Childhood (ages 2 ½ to 8 years old) students.  
  2. Describe central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the subject matter disciplines for Early Childhood (ages 2 ½ to 8 years old) students.  
  3. Utilize formative and summative assessments, to determine, select, and implement effective instructional strategies for Early Childhood (ages 2 ½ to 8 years old) students.  
  4. Analyze the values, commitments, and ethics of the teaching profession within the school community.  
  5. Explain the Marianist tradition of providing an integral, quality education within diverse learning communities.

*Prior to taking any early childhood courses, it is required that the student ED 101 Introduction to Chaminade Early Childhood Education course.

Note: Student Teaching and Seminar must be taken after completion of academic courses. ED 493A and ED 497A must be taken concurrently in the fall student teaching term and ED 493B and ED 497B must be taken in the following spring student teaching term.

Early Intervention Specialization

Students, in the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Early Childhood Education with Montessori Credential and PK-K Licensure program, who wish to add the specialization of “Early Intervention” to their MA degree, will need to the the extra courses: EDUC-663 & EDUC-696
