Medical Emergencies Guide

  • Call 9-1-1
  • Notify Campus Security, (808) 735-4792 or ext. 4792 (from on-campus phones)
  • Notify Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students if it is a student medical emergency, (808) 735-4710

In a medical emergency, remain calm and do not move the victim unless their location poses a possible danger. Immediately ask someone nearby to call 911 and then call Campus Security at (808) 735-4792.

Let Campus Security and emergency responders know if the victim:

  • is unconscious; 
  • has trouble breathing; 
  • has chest pain or pressure; 
  • is bleeding severely; 
  • is having or had a seizure; 
  • has possible broken bones; 
  • has injuries to the head, neck or back; 
  • or appears to have been poisoned or exposed to hazardous materials.

Care for life threatening conditions and provide first aid only if you have the proper training. After the person has been helped, remain at the scene to assist with the incident investigation.

Mental Health Emergency

  • During business hours: for non-life-threatening crisis, you may reach out to the Counseling Center for crisis intervention during our business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30AM to 4:30PM. 
  • After business hours: if you or someone else is experiencing an immediate life-threatening emergency, please do one or more of the following. Contact:
    • Campus Security, (808) 735-4792
    • 911 for immediate assistance
    • Hawai‘i CARES 24/7 Crisis line, (808) 832-3100
    • Suicide Hotline 1-800-273-8255 Phone counseling (24/7)
    • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, Call or Text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org

Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure

  • Exposure involving HANDS and ARMS: Immediately wash vigorously with soap and hot water, taking care to pay attention to webs between fingers and fingernails. 
  • Exposure involving MOUTH or EYES: Clean the area with large amounts of water. 
  • Exposure involving a CUT, ABRASION, or PUNCTURE to the skin: Allow bleeding and wash with antimicrobial soap and large amounts of water. 
  • Then: 
    • Report the exposure incident to Campus Security at (808) 735-4792. 
    • Campus Security will fill out reports and make necessary notifications.
