The Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology program prepares students to assess, train, and provide strategies and methods to address P-12 school and community challenges by anticipating future needs through evidence-based research and culturally attuned practices. The Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology prepares individuals to meet the holistic and transformational needs of P-12 students and the community by addressing three domains:
1) Psychological Test Administration
2) Counseling
3) Scholar-Practitioner Researcher
Concentration in Mental Health Counseling:
The Concentration in Mental Health Counseling is designed to allow students to meet the academic requirements for the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Mental Health license. Graduates can practice as mental health counselors, opening up career opportunities (including inside and outside of the field of education). The curriculum includes advanced counseling courses, training in test administration, and a culminating experience in the form of a dissertation. Students must also complete a 600-hour internship within a PK-12 school setting.
Concentration in School Psychology
The Concentration in School Psychology is designed to allow those who have been trained as a School Psychologist – Specialist level, to further their education by becoming a change agent within the education field by becoming a scholar-practitioner researcher. Graduates can have a greater influence within their school communities by being skilled in program evaluation and authoring original research. In addition, graduates will be able to work at colleges and universities (e.g., administration, part-time or full-time faculty). The curriculum includes School Psychology-related coursework and a dissertation requirement.

- Develop and apply advanced clinical skills to effectively assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health concerns in PK-12 students, utilizing evidence-based practices and culturally responsive approaches.
- Engage with an innovative, research-based, and real-world curriculum that emphasizes the development of strong clinical competencies, equipping them to meet the holistic and mental health needs of PK-12 students and deliver effective mental health services in educational settings.
- Critically evaluate and apply scientific knowledge and research to inform the selection and implementation of effective mental health interventions, prevention strategies, and wellness approaches that promote the well-being of PK-12 students.
- Synthesize the value of adaptation and change with applied 21st-century leadership, supervision, and consultation skills, adapting to the evolving needs of diverse and complex organizational systems in the provision of comprehensive mental health services within educational settings.
