The EdD in Educational Psychology is designed for advanced practitioners and leaders in education, psychology, and mental health who want to expand their expertise in assessment, counseling, leadership, and applied research within educational and community settings.

The program prepares you to understand and address the complex needs of individuals across diverse settings. By integrating psychological principles with practical assessment tools, graduates learn to identify challenges, develop effective support plans, and implement evidence-based interventions. You’ll apply your expertise in schools, community mental health centers, private practice, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and corporate environments—supporting children, adolescents, and adults in navigating developmental, emotional, and behavioral challenges while promoting positive mental health and learning outcomes.

Mental Health Counseling

The Mental Health Counseling concentration is designed to meet the academic requirements for mental health counselor licensure through the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA). Graduates are prepared to pursue careers as licensed mental health counselors in educational and community settings.

The curriculum includes advanced counseling coursework, assessment training, research and data analysis, and leadership and consultation skills, culminating in a doctoral dissertation. Students must also complete a 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship* in a clinical mental health setting, which may include K–12 schools.

*The internship is NOT required for Chaminade graduates of the MSCP program

School Psychology

The School Psychology concentration is designed for practitioners trained as a School Psychologist – Specialist level who wish to advance their expertise as scholar–practitioner researchers. The program prepares you to become a change agent in education through program evaluation, applied research, and leadership within school communities.

You may also pursue roles in higher education, including administration or part-time and full-time faculty positions. The curriculum includes advanced school psychology coursework* and a doctoral dissertation.

*Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed Chaminade University’s EdS in School Psychology program

Program Details

Upon completion of the Doctorate of Education program, students will be able to:

  1. Develop and apply advanced clinical skills to effectively assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health concerns in PK-12 students, utilizing evidence-based practices and culturally responsive approaches.
  2. Engage with an innovative, research-based, and real-world curriculum that emphasizes the development of strong clinical competencies, equipping them to meet the holistic and mental health needs of PK-12 students and deliver effective mental health services in educational settings.
  3. Critically evaluate and apply scientific knowledge and research to inform the selection and implementation of effective mental health interventions, prevention strategies, and wellness approaches that promote the well-being of PK-12 students. 
  4. Synthesize the value of adaptation and change with applied 21st century leadership, supervision, and consultation skills, adapting to the evolving needs of diverse and complex organizational systems in the provision of comprehensive mental health services within educational settings.
