Chaminade’s Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education prepares you to support children ages 2½ to 8 during some of the most important years of their development. You’ll learn how children grow and learn, explore effective teaching practices for diverse learners, and develop the skills to create engaging, supportive learning environments.

Through a strong foundation in early childhood education, you’ll also explore the responsibilities and ethics of the teaching profession—preparing you to adapt, lead, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners.

Upon completion of the AS undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of learner development, learner differences, diverse students and the learning environment to optimize learning for Early Childhood (ages 2 ½ to 8 years old) students. 
  2. Describe central concepts, tools of inquiry and structures of the subject matter disciplines for Early Childhood (ages 2 ½ to 8 years old) students. 
  3. Analyze the values, commitments, and ethics of the teaching profession within the school and community as we educate for adaptation and change.

In addition to the general education requirements, these are the pre-major and major requirements below:

Required Coursework

A minimum of 60 semester hours of credit with a GPA of 2.0 in all work completed at Chaminade is required for this degree. The completion of all general education requirements including 15 semester hours of course work, and 12 semester hours in the area of emphasis will count towards the degree completion. Courses are offered strictly online and/or on several designated Chaminade off-campus locations, i.e. restricted military bases.

  • ED 101 Intro to ECE*

*Prior to taking any early childhood courses, it is required that the student ED 101 Introduction to Chaminade Early Childhood Education course.

  • ED 233* Intro to Early Childhood Ed I
  • ED 234* Intro to Early Childhood Ed I
  • ED 297* Fieldwork Practicum

*This program includes a nine-credit course of study to provide candidates seeking the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with the background information and support to develop a resource file and the competencies necessary to obtain the CDA credential outside of Chaminade University. Prior to taking any Early Childhood Education courses, it is required that the student take the one-credit ED-101 Introduction to Chaminade Early Childhood Education course.
