Biography
Dr. Fryxell is the Dean of Education and Behavioral Sciences and a Professor of Psychology at Chaminade University where in addition to his administrative work, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate psychology, counseling, and education courses. Over the past 25+ years, Dr. Fryxell has taught many different courses at Chaminade including personality and cross-cultural courses. Two of his favorite courses to teach are the Psychology of Serial Killers and Sports Psychology. As the Dean since 2015, Dr. Fryxell is responsible for the psychology, criminal justice, and education programs including the PsyD in Clinical Psychology, the EdD in Organizational Leadership for Adaptation and Change, the EdD in Educational Psychology, the Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy, the EdS in School Psychology, the Masters level counseling, criminology and criminal justice, and education programs, and the undergraduate education, psychology and criminology and criminal justice programs. In his past work at Chaminade, he also served as the Clinical Director for the Master’s in Counseling Psychology School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, and Marriage and Family Counseling Programs.
He received his undergraduate degree in Sociology with an emphasis in criminology and deviant behavior from the University of Minnesota. He has a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from St. Thomas University, and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in psychology from the University of Hawaii. Additionally, Dr. Fryxell was selected for and completed the FBI Citizens’ Academy program. He has conducted research on and developed programs related to youth mentoring, suicide prevention, childhood anger and violence, family strengthening, drug abuse prevention, working with children, adolescents, and adults who have severe and challenging behaviors, and mentoring children who have incarcerated parents. He has been a consultant for the Hawaii Department of Education’s Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP) for over 25 years. In the past, he also served as a consultant for the Hawaii State Department of Health working with children and adults with Autism.
Dr. Fryxell currently serves as Chaminade’s Faculty Athletic Representative (NCAA). He is also a Marianist Educational Associate at Chaminade.
