Living in Honolulu

Honolulu is a great place to live if you are looking for a close-knit community with all the conveniences of a large city. Honolulu has arts and entertainment, malls, and shopping opportunities similar to many large U.S. cities. For food, expect to find local food and international cuisines as well as familiar fast food chains and traditional American options.

Honolulu Neighborhoods

Chinatown

One of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States, Honolulu’s Chinatown offers a unique mix of historical buildings, traditional Chinese markets, and contemporary boutiques, galleries and local eateries.

Kakaako

Honolulu’s latest emerging neighborhood, Kaka’ako is a creative center for arts, culture and innovative businesses and restaurants.

Kaimuki

Located blocks from Chaminade, Kaimuki offers access to neighborhood shops, stores and unique restaurants.

Waikiki

As the main destination for Oahu’s visitors, Waikiki is the epicenter for world-class hotels, luxury shopping, dining and activities.  Iconic landmarks include Waikiki Beach, Kapiolani Park and Diamond Head.

Transportation

Getting around Honolulu is easy even without a car. Many great local eateries and restaurants are within walking distance of the Chaminade campus. Otherwise, the following options will help you get around the island:

TheBus
Routes that travel all around the island. Several major stops are located just in front of the Chaminade campus on Waialae Avenue.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing Apps
Taxis and ride-sharing apps are easy to utilize in Honolulu and offer another option for getting around town.

Biking
Honolulu has designated bike lanes around town and through the neighborhood of Kaimuki (located near Chaminade campus).

Organized Activities

If you live on-campus, many activities and outings are organized through Residence Life throughout the year. Residence Life activities provide great social opportunities for residents and introduce newcomers to the island culture. Student Support Services, Campus Ministry and many of the student organizations also host a variety of on and off campus activities.
