Chaminade University School of Nursing and Health Professions supports a Parish Health program. This innovative program started in August 2021 and includes faculty, staff, and students from both Community and Public Health (CPH) and Nursing programs.
The Parish Health program provides students with health care educational experiences while serving parishioners in Hawaii. Nursing and CPH students provide health education and health promotion to parishioners under the supervision of nursing and CPH faculty. Health promotion activities include mental, physical, and spiritual health based on Marianist and Native Hawaiian values.
My biggest takeaway from participating in the Parish Health program is that healthcare expands far beyond the reach of hospitals. Parish Health is not only making a difference in our communities but it’s also adapting and evolving rapidly to accommodate the changes we see in the health care system today.

Parish Health Services
Health Screenings & Health Education
Students and faculty go to parish locations to provide on-site health screenings and health education on a variety of topics including nutrition, hypertension, and physical activities.
Tele-health Wellness Surveys & Individual Assessments
Tele-health wellness surveys and individual assessments are provided to interested parishioners aged 55 years and older. Participants receive individualized resources and recommendations to improve their health and wellbeing.
Physical Activity Resources
Physical activity is encouraged through an innovative walking program. The Parish Health program launched a Virtual Walk to Jerusalem. This health promotion activity included parishioners and School of Nursing and Health Professions students and faculty. The virtual walk concluded on Easter Sunday. Nearly 200 participants are recording their steps and are virtually walking on a guided spiritual path to Jerusalem. Our next planned virtual walk to Bethlehem will begin in September 2022 and conclude on Christmas Day.
