After Filing the FAFSA

Next steps

After filing the FAFSA, several steps will ensure that you receive the aid which you are eligible.

Remember, after Chaminade has sent you an award letter you must first accept the award in order to use it. In order to take out a loan that you have accepted, you must be sure to fill out all loan paperwork.

Checking up

After you submit the FAFSA online, watch your email inbox for messages regarding your FAFSA. Three days after you hit “submit” and file the FAFSA, you can check the status of your FAFSA online on the FAFSA site. You can see if anything is incomplete or if additional steps need to be taken.

Expect a one to two week processing delay until Chaminade receives your report and we begin to assemble your financial aid package (after March 1).

What to expect

The Office of Financial Aid will begin packaging awards and will send out letters in March (for fall semester enrollment.) Award eligibility will be determined by the estimated budget for attendance and the student’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC).

New/Incoming campus undergraduate students will receive a copy of their award letter in the mail. New and current undergraduate students, Flex (online undergraduate) students, graduate students, and doctoral students can access their award letter via Self-Service. To access Self-Service, students will need their 7-digit student ID number and password.

Accepting award

After receiving your award letter, research the types of aid you qualify for. You must accept the award in order to use it.

New incoming students will need to complete a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling to receive any Federal Student Loans. These forms can be accessed at studentaid.gov. Current students do not need to resubmit the Master Promissory Note or Entrance Counseling.

If you are awarded a Parent PLUS Loan or Alternative Loan, you will need to apply for the loan every year. Unlike federal student loans, PLUS loans and alternative loans are not guaranteed. Applicants’ credit history must be verified each year for eligibility.

If you are receiving Work-Study, begin searching and applying for on-campus jobs before the start of the semester. Work-Study recipients must obtain a job designated for the Work-Study program to obtain aid and are not guaranteed. See the Work-Study page for more information.
