From Benicia, California, Dr. Marian Murphy transferred to Chaminade University of Honolulu in the fall of 2006 as a junior. A gifted scholar-athlete, Marian was a member of Chaminade University’s inaugural women’s basketball team, and played both of her years at Chaminade, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. In addition, Marian was a member of several clubs and organizations on campus to include the Biology club, Interact club, and was a member of the Gamma Sigma Epsilon National Chemistry Honor Society. Marian graduated from Chaminade University, Summa Cum Laude in May 2008, with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Biology.
In the summer after her junior year at Chaminade, Marian interned at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center through the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Minority Access to Research Careers Summer Research Opportunity Program. She later presented her Research project, “Does Reduction of GLUT1 in Mammary Tumor Cells Suppress Proliferation & Alter Cell Metabolism?” at the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science conference in October 2007. While applying to medical, Marian also worked as a research associate at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine testing the effectiveness of therapeutic medication for HIV patients.
Marian graduated from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine valedictorian of her class in June 2013. During her time at medical school, Marian was one of eleven students chosen to participate in the Touro University Global Health Program summer internship in Linkou, Taiwan. She spent her preliminary intern year at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California, and will continue to study Anesthesiology at the University of Utah.
