Project S.H.I.N.E.
Project S.H.I.N.E. gives service-learning students the opportunity to tutor elder immigrants in practical English and citizenship.
Training sessions are mandatory.
We offer ONE session to prepare new tutors – our combined Orientation & On-Site Training.
You must register for S.H.I.N.E. and for Service-Learning before attending (see instructions below). The Orientation segment covers program requirements, intake protocols, and shift-scheduling. The On-Site Training segment features immigration and naturalization information, exercises on aging and cultural sensitivity, curriculum ideas, and tips for developing yourself as a tutor.
When: Saturday, February 1, 2020, 8:45am – 11:30am
Where: Our Saturday site: Kukui Gardens, 420 N King St. #107. A map and parking instructions will be linked near the end of the S.H.I.N.E. registration page online.
To sign up,
Step 1: If you know you can commit to all of the requirements described in the sections above, register here. Registration closes on the day before Orientation. Be sure to click “submit” AND view/print the map with parking instructions.
Step 2: Register for service-learning online. Print the Connection/Waiver form and bring it to Orientation.
Step 3: Participate in S.H.I.N.E. Orientation & On-Site Training as described above. BE ON TIME. Attending the session in full is mandatory, and no make-up sessions will be available.
Bring your Connection/Waiver form (printed upon registering for service-learning online) to orientation. Also, bring a black pen and $5 for a field book (purchase is optional).
The second mandatory S.H.I.N.E. training is ur mid-semester Reflection Workshop.
It provides a forum for any problems and observations that may have arisen during the first few weeks of tutoring and allows students to “own” S.H.I.N.E. by developing it together. It also provides help for writing reflection papers and focuses on learning from our learners. Bring a pen and paper for note-taking. Prepare to share techniques that are working for you, as well as something you’ve learned from and/or about your students thus far.
When: Saturday, February 29, 2020, 3:30–5:30 PM
Where: Chaminade University, Hale Hoaloha, room 103
