The President Sue Wesselkamper Prize

Endowed by Henry and Charlotte Clark

Given annually to recognize and encourage student scholarship and to build the tradition of the annual Na Liko Naʻauao student scholarship day. The recipient of this prize will also be distinguished by having significant participation in community and University service.  In addition, this prize will recognize the faculty member who has served as the student’s mentor and who nominated the student.

Qualifications

This prize may be offered to qualified undergraduate students nearing graduation, who meet the following criteria and must have evidence of their outstanding scholarship as exemplified by:

  • having a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.50
  • having evidence of scholarship beyond the classroom, as evidenced by undertaking directed research or study beyond ordinary course requirements
  • having presented their scholarly work in academic settings both on and off campus.

In addition, a candidate must:

  • have completed at least 90 credit hours at the time of the award
  • have a record of at least 20 hours of community service and or service-learning per semester
  • show significant leadership in one or more co-curricular activities such as CSGA, University committees, a recognized student club, Campus Ministry, student retreats, or special academic programs such as the Hogan Entrepreneur Program or the Hawaiian leadership program
  • describe post-graduation plans with preference given to candidates whose plans build on experiences at Chaminade University, including application to graduate school, a research internship, or commitment to a volunteer program

Nomination and Review Process

Nominations will be made by a faculty mentor of the student. The evaluation of the nominees will be made by a faculty committee, appointed by the Provost.

Award Amount

The student prize will be $1,000 and may be increased based on endowment appreciation.  The faculty mentor prize will be $100, and also may be increased based on endowment appreciation, but may not exceed 10% of the size of the prize given to the student.

Presentation of Award

The award will be presented at Na Liko Naauao student scholarship day.  The winning student will make an address of approximately ten minutes on their scholarly work, its impact on their study at Chaminade and the community, and discuss future educational and professional plans.
