NUR290: Nursing Concepts

Honoring our Kūpuna and their Legacies

As an ongoing project for NUR290, students conduct interviews or “talk-story” sessions with elders at our partner facilities. These precious oral histories are then “gifted” to the elders and their families. In some cases, formal presentations have been delivered to staff at our partner organizations, reporting on the highlights of our findings and interview aggregates.

For Current NUR290 Students:

Confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism are important to all of our partner organizations which serve elders.

Volunteers are expected to be:

  • active listeners
  • patient, respectful, tolerant, sympathetic, pleasant, conversant and mature
  • positive, sensitive and interested
  • prompt and responsible for fulfilling agreed-upon tasks (with client/organization).
  • positive representatives of the CUH SON. Community uniforms with badges should be work during all service-learning interactions this term.

NUR290 students have multiple partner sites where service-learning can be done; a separate sign-up tool is used for each one. You will work in PAIRS; choose ONE SITE for all of the hours you do with your partner.

SITES

Saint Francis Adult Day Center

St. Francis Healthcare Systems provides a therapeutic, social, educational, and recreational adult day care program certified by the Department of Human Services. This Adult Day Center in Manoa is the primary partner for NUR290.

Location

2715 Pamoa Road, Honolulu, HI 96822
Park along the roundabout, as shown on this map. (portal login required)

Hours
  • Arts & Crafts: Monday–Friday, 10–11 AM
  • Activity Hour: Monday–Friday, 1:30–2:30 PM
Responsibilities

Volunteers will provide assistance for small groups of elders, who are at varying levels of ability. Each small group will also be supervised by a staff person, but volunteers will provide individual encouragement, companionship, and assistance in completing the activities. You’re encouraged to develop and lead activities that are music- or art-related if you have those skills or interests.

This is your chance to represent Chaminade in a valued partnership, linked to a trusted local healthcare provider. There should be ample supervision and good structure to the program. You should be able to work with and/or observe elders with a wide range of physical/mental abilities.

Get Started
  • Complete the service-learning Community Connection Form and submit it to your professor, in class on Friday, September 14, 2018. St.Francis Adult Day Center is your Project/Site. You do not need a site supervisor’s signature. Be sure to obtain a timesheet/evaluation form for service-learning. All forms are available from your professor.
  • Find a partner for the semester. You should complete service as a team of two. Sign up for EIGHT (8) shifts, with no more than two (2) shifts per week, by entering your first and last names (ie: “Jane Doe & John Doe”), then clicking on your eight shifts. Note that only two teams can sign up during a shift.
    • An additional two hours will be added to your timesheet by your professor after you show your work on the oral history piece of this project.

Complete sign-ups by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

For your first day on site, plan to arrive more than 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. Be sure to bring your documents proving current TB clearance and criminal background check clearance. You must check in and complete a short orientation with Site Supervisor, Mrs. Jacquelyn Manaole (if she is not available, another staff member will do an intake with you).  Obtain a parking pass for the term, and tell her about any arts & crafts or musical interests/talents you have. These may influence the activities you do.
