Registration
View these instructions before you register for Service-Learning.
Every semester you’ll be taking different courses, so you’ll need to register each semester if you’re doing service-learning. Every project’s connection to a specific course should be documented via a new registration in any given semester.
Yes, all students doing service-learning through Chaminade courses should register online. View registration instructions to get started.
Yes, all students doing service-learning through Chaminade courses should register online. View registration instructions to get started. The community group/project’s registration is part of their internal process; Chaminade’s service-learning registration is for Chaminade’s purposes.
Doing a service, such as a beach cleanup or helping immigrants learn English, is community service in itself. However, “service” becomes “service-learning” when it is formally connected to academic learning objectives.
Helping immigrants learn English becomes service-learning in a sociology or anthropology course, when studying acculturation, immigration, assimilation, etc.
Service-learning will facilitate critical reflection on the service experience that should enhance your academic learning.
Students who have received a syllabus from their professor that includes a service-learning requirement/option are the only students who are eligible to participate in service-learning. In some cases, arrangements can be made with professors who are not formally offering service-learning; contact the Service-Learning office for help.
If you have not received instructions from your professor, but would like to do community service, you do not need to register for Service-Learning. Contact Campus Ministry instead.
Projects/Classes
Yes, you still need to complete the waiver for Chaminade University’s Service-Learning Office; the waivers you sign for your service site belong to the community partner. Signing the Chaminade waiver is part of your Community Connection Agreement and is a mandatory part of registration for service-learning at Chaminade. View registration instructions.
It depends on what project you’re doing, and which professors/courses are offering service-learning. Some projects may be specific to one class only. Many others have broad-based applications. For example, Project SHINE can be relevant in history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geography, English, business, communication, etc.
Ask each of your professors if they will allow you to do your service-learning project for each of your other service-learning classes. Explain the total number of hours you’ll be serving, and what project you want to do. If they allow you to do the project for their class AND your other classes, you will most likely have to do separate reflection assignments for each course.
After you get approval from all of your service-learning instructors, you can fill out ONE Community Connection Agreement & Assumption of Risk, Release and Waiver sheet.
Yes. You must register and fill in the online form with ALL the classes for which you’re doing service-learning. You will be prompted to print the Community Connection Agreement & Assumption of Risk, Release and Waiver sheet. You must complete ONE of these sheets for EACH project that you do.
On each sheet, you must fill in the “Agency/Project” – and next to that, please note which course it corresponds with.
It depends on the site; you should check with the supervisor there. Palolo Elementary, SHINE, and many other projects do not require going to training again. However, you must still register online, contact your supervisor for scheduling, and get your site agreement/waiver signed and submitted to the Service-Learning Office each semester.
Forms/Due Dates
Yes, you still need to complete the waiver for Chaminade University’s Service-Learning Office; the waivers you sign for your service site belong to the community partner. Signing the Chaminade waiver is part of your Community Connection Agreement and is a mandatory part of registration for service-learning at Chaminade. View registration instructions.
You must first follow the instructions to register. Work with your professor and your project/site supervisor to complete the Community Connection Agreement & Assumption of Risk, Release and Waiver form. At the bottom, be sure to circle “YES” to indicate that you need a timesheet/evaluation form.
Submit that form to the Service-Learning Office. There is an inbox outside the office, in case no one is in. After verifying the completion of your form, the Service-Learning Office will provide you with a timesheet/evaluation form. If you used the inbox, check your email for notifications about your form.
They are NOT posted on our website. If your professor requires you to track your hours, you can PICK UP this form when you turn in a completed Connection Form. There is a space to indicate whether or not you need to pick up a form. If we are not in the office at the time, we will leave one for you in our “For Pick-Up” box.
No, you do not need a timesheet/evaluation form. However, you DO need to register and complete the Community Connection Agreement & Assumption of Risk, Release and Waiver form. Your professor can sign as your “Site Supervisor.”
The due date for your timesheet/evaluation forms is important because all of your data must be processed by the Service-Learning Office and reported to your professors before they begin grading. In general, you should still ask your supervisor to complete your evaluation and submit your paperwork (showing the number of hours you have completed) on time. If you need to discuss special circumstances, contact the Service-Learning Office.
Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders (SHINE)
Find the current term’s SHINE registration link AND register for service-learning. Instructions are posted here. Registration and attendance at Orientation & On-Site Training are mandatory.
This program is entirely run by volunteers, and there is no opportunities for “make-up” orientation/training sessions. All new tutors must attend the session/s as scheduled to participate.
You must contact Candice Sakuda before the orientation date. In most cases you will not have to attend training again.
