Hawaii has long been known as the crossroads of the Pacific—a central and multicultural gathering place for people from East and West to work and study. The International Studies degree program reflects the unique nature of these islands as an intellectually, politically and culturally rich hub, and as a place for building opportunities for dialogue and understanding.

Our program is offered through a partnership between the School of Humanities, Arts, and Design which offers the International Relations concentration, and the School of Business and Communication, which offers the International Business concentration.

International Relations students are interested in studying political interactions, structures, processes and figures, and are encouraged to pursue their own academic passions as they craft an individualized course of study. Areas of specializations include history, diplomacy, human rights and the environment, and courses offered cover everything from social justice to commerce.

The International Studies degree prepares students for graduate level work in a number of disciplines as well as careers in government, diplomacy, and international affairs. To help set students up for success, the program offers robust academic advising, internship opportunities and world-class experiential learning programs, including the Hogan Entrepreneurs Program.

International Studies: International Relations (B.A.)

Upon completion of the undergraduate B.A. program in International Studies – International Relations, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize the major political, economic, and socio-cultural forces shaping international affairs, past and present.
  2. Compare and contrast theories and perspectives in International Relations and International Studies.
  3. Examine the primary global environmental threats at present and the international institutions and agreements created to address them.
  4. Evaluate the profound political, economic, environmental, technological, and socio-cultural challenges facing humanity in the 21st Century.
  5. Synthesize a position statement of their own that advances a cogent argument encompassing the student’s view of the contemporary and potential future risks facing the global system.
