How to become a Federal Work-Study (FWS) site

What is a Federal Work-Study site?

Organizations partner with Chaminade University by hiring only FWS eligible students to work for each academic term. Chaminade University accepts five to ten sites per year on the condition that they serve the community through literacy initiatives and community service. Chaminade University is responsible for paying 100% of the students’ wages, up to the students’ allotted FWS monetary award.

How does an organization become a Federal Work-Study site?

The first step is to make contact with the Office of Advising and Career Development at advising@chaminade.edu or (808) 735-4815. The office will schedule a site visit, to ensure the organization is the right fit for our students. There is no guarantee to these organizations that students will be hired to fit the need. Chaminade University does its best to advertise and place student in these positions.

How do students apply to Federal Work-Study positions?

FWS positions are posted on Chaminade employment website. A basic job description form must be completed in order to post the open job, and Students apply directly through that system (all applications are sent via email to the Career Specialist, evaluated for eligibility, and then sent to the site supervisor). Once the supervisor has students in mind that they would like to interview or hire, they must confirm and coordinate with the Career Specialist before the student is able to officially start work at the site.

How many students can be hired?

The number of students that may be hired and the amount they can be paid is determined each year by the federal funding Chaminade University is allotted to use. It can vary from year to year. Sites are allowed to create/post up-to 3 positions for consideration.

What does it mean when a student is eligible for Federal Work-Study funds?

Students who have been awarded FWS as a part of their financial aid package must seek on campus employment or off campus Community Service employment. The dollars that are awarded to you must be acquired by working in an approved job. The primary benefit of the FWS program for the student is that the income from this type of employment is exempt from the income reported on the subsequent year’s Financial Aid Form. Only students who meet federal guidelines and have been awarded aid or are eligible for aid may apply to FWS sites. If a student or supervisor needs to check the FWS status for any student, they may contact Advising and Career Development at (808) 735-4815.

If you have additional questions or are interested in becoming an off-campus FWS site, please contact us at (808) 735-4815 or advising@chaminade.edu. Federal funding may change from year to year, and interested organizations will need to inquire.

Get Involved In The Chaminade Community

Career Advisory Board

The Career Advisory Board meets approximately two times each year and serves to consult with and inform representatives of Chaminade’s faculty and staff and local employers on such topics as internship preparation, leadership development, services offered by the Office of Advising and Career Development, job fairs, and other campus events for employers or students. Employers provide guidance on the skill sets and employability factors students must possess to be successful in the workplace enabling the University to develop a better sense of the skills students must acquire prior to graduation.
